Windlass wiring

Looking for suggestions on convenient (easiest) route to run the
wiring from windlass to battery. Solenoid placement (closer to
windlass)? Suggestions/hints on painless installation if any.
Thanks

I ran 1-0 wire from the batteries through an on/off switch/breaker along the stbd. deck-hull space. The solenoid is mounted to the chain locker bulkhead. This arrangment seems to work fine and is relatively easy to install.

<div>Joe,I opted to place another battery forward under the V berth to cut down on transmission loss. I ran the charging lines in the starboard deck hull space as did Jim. Since I was only using the lines for charging I was able to get by with smaller cable. I forget what size I used but it was smaller automotive sized battery cable. We were living out of the country at the time and there wasn't much available. The additional battery forward has actually come in quite handy. I use it for the anchor lights, the sw washdown pump and other non-essential loads.Dick

Hey,
I have successfully wired my windlass. A major feat for this non-electrical guy! I ran 1/0AWG from the bow to the batbox under the 1/4 berth. I ran it along the wire run on the starboard side up under the toe rail. Ran it down behind the fuse panel, drilled a hole thru the absolute corner of the batbox and lead the wires in. Everything was zip tied every 6-8". Once in the box, I went to the starter battery due to it's high cranking amps and very little use. I wired in the 90A breaker to the pos wire and then via an old "red-keyed" master switch before going on up to the battery terminal. The master switch was taken out of commission when I had the Heart and Link 2000 system put in. So, it's a perfect key switch for safety to give juice to the windlass.
The concept is to use the engine when using the windlass, which means that the battery will never really take the load by itself.
If I am making a grave mistake, speak up you guys.
