Windlass Pad

I just purchased a S/L Horizon 900 windlass, and I'm trying to pre-plan as much of the installation as possible. Looking thru the archives, many have their windlass mounted on a pad. What is the reason for this, to improve the angle to the chainwheel? Help eliminate water draining from the deck down the hawse hole? I have some 3/4" white poly material similar to starboard, would a 1-1/2" stack be about the right height for this? If I use a 3/4 ply as backing pad, will I need longer studs? It comes with 6" studs, leaves about 5" working thickness. OK, so now how do I plug that hawse hole with the chain running thru it, for those "Green Water-Over-the-Deck Days" on Lake Ontario? Wow--you can tell I can't wait for the Spring Boat Project Season to begin!

I met a canadian couple that had cruised around the world and their solution was to build a wooden plug that was permanently fixed around the chain and wired in place at the point the chain fall entered the hawse hole. The weight of the fall held it in place. They had added a little duct tape around the plug that was replaced ocassionally that helped it form fit a little better. They had used the system for years and liked it.

Larry,

I mounted my windlass on a pad in order to improve the angle of the chain. I used 1.25 inch mahogany.

My Horizon Express windlass was mounted on a piece of 1/2" sanalite (like cutting board, very similar to Starboard). The main reason was to keep the metal housing of the windlass off the deck and out of water, both sea and rain. The studs that came with the machine were long enough to pass through that, the deck and a piece of 3/4" marine ply glassed in under the deck. There's photos of the installation in the photo gallery under 382's Dana.

Larry,
I'm going to order a windlass this spring. Did you buy the S/L Horizon 900G or the 900GD. Sailnet has a price on the 900GD of 1240.00. What do you think?

Larry,
Could you tell me when you bought yours. I,m surprised at the price difference.
Thanks
RCL

Bob.. Sailnet had a special before the end of the year, 2001 pricing, 10% off, free freight. I bought a bunch of stuff then, and still got gift certificate coupons thru the SailPerks plan. I shopped extensively, and the deals couldn't be beat.
