I just purchased a S/L Horizon 900 windlass, and I'm trying to pre-plan as much of the installation as possible. Looking thru the archives, many have their windlass mounted on a pad. What is the reason for this, to improve the angle to the chainwheel? Help eliminate water draining from the deck down the hawse hole? I have some 3/4" white poly material similar to starboard, would a 1-1/2" stack be about the right height for this? If I use a 3/4 ply as backing pad, will I need longer studs? It comes with 6" studs, leaves about 5" working thickness. OK, so now how do I plug that hawse hole with the chain running thru it, for those "Green Water-Over-the-Deck Days" on Lake Ontario? Wow--you can tell I can't wait for the Spring Boat Project Season to begin!
