V-Berth length

Ahoy all. I am brand new to this forum. I am very interested in a few morgan 382's and 383's that are for sale. I have never been on one. All i know about them is what I have read online. It seems there is a ton of info. But I am wondering how long the v birth and quarter birth are? I am 6'8" tall.I am used to ducking and sleeping in a ball. But if I knew I could fit comfortably in a m38 I would definitely make the 10 hour drive to survey them.

Hi there - and welcome aboard!
Well, I know you would need to fold yourself up to fit in the V-Berth. I'm 6' tall and it fits me exactly. The quarter berth is better, and it might be long enough. I can measure it when I go out tonight, if someone else hasn't replied by then.
Cheers,

Hello again. At the boat now & just measured the quarter berth. It’s 6’-4” long. But you could sleep diagonally, which is about 7’. Wouldn’t be much room for a co-sleeper, but the admiral & I usually sleep in different berths while aboard anyway.

Welcome, I am fairly new to the boat too. We purchased end of March. Anyway, the V Berth
is marginal at best. I am 5'7" and i use most of it alone. It isn't easy to get into either. But it is where I usually sleep. My wife and I have slept together there, but only once.

I would think the Quarter Berth is more appropriate for you. I LOVE this boat! I am sure you would too if you can figure out the sleeping situation. I am on Sonata now and without a tape measure, laid down on the starboard salon berth and think it is probably 7' the port side is the same and converts to a double easily.

Looking forward to cruising soon.

Captsteve:
The aft end of the quarter berth on our hull #41 has some odd cabinetry that can be removed to get some more inches. In fact it appears that you can cut out the plywood panel at the end and move it further aft if you were so inclined, doesn't appear to be anything behind it.

I don't think at your height you will be able to stand up straight in the cabin.

I gave the wifey the V berth. I took the port side double with a piece of memory foam. A hassle to make the double every day & roll the bedding. But we both value a good night's sleep (once I figured out how to keep the filler cushion from falling in the middle of the night). Our quarter berth was the storage garage, filled with gear.

I am 6'4" and just "barely fit" in the V berth. My G/F is just 5'2" and I get to use the entire foot area, so it works out okay. I think 6'8" would a little tight. As far as head room.....I cannot stand up straight anywhere down below, (except under the main hatch)
I have a 384....if that makes any difference in dimensions.

Captsteve,
My 382 has the over and under v-berth. I created a full width v-berth by extending the over bunk to the port side supporting it with a ledger screwed to the inner hull (there is about 5/8" foam layer between the inner and outer hull above the waterline). I then cut a series of 1x6 alder planks to lay across (they are removable) . You do need a folding step to get into the berth and the clearance is limited to that of the "over" bunk. New 6" foam bunk cushions and 2" temperfoam topper did the job. I'm 6'2" and my wife is 5'7". We spend most of May through October with this arrangement. It has been quite satisfactory! That was installed 25 years ago.
When our 6'6" son visits he sleeps in the quarter berth. I cut an opening in the rear of the quarter berth and that gives it another 10 inches. He is not a fan of life below.
Cheers,
John

Just back from a weekend on the boat. I measured the bunk lengths as I happen to have a tape measure in my hand. The Vbunk ( ours was the over/under that was converted to a single bunk at the level of the upper bunk) is 6'-5". The Port Settee is 6'5". The stbd settee is 6'-5" (very narrow) and the quarter berth is 6'-4". Hope this helps.

Jim
