Solent stay

I did this years ago. Can't sent pictures rightt now, but will try to,figure out how to do it. My shipyard made a stainless chainplate that goes through the deck forward of the anchor locker and is attached to the outside of the bow below the anchor rollers. You do not want to attach the Solent stay just to the deck. The mast attachment is a little below the mast head. Mine is bolted to the mast, but does not have a long bolt going through the mast from side to side. The shipyard discussed the attachment with nav architect Carl Schumacher for design purposes. I had some concern about the mast head connection at first, but it has been reliable. If you send me an email address, I can send some pictures to you dirctly. Not sure I can figure out how to post pictures to the forum. One problem, is the best highfield levers are no longer available, I think.

Hi Vern:
The PO of our boat gave us his set of the Brewer Owners Plans when we bought ours.

One of the drawings is the design entitled "Staysail Stay Hookup Morgan 38" and that shows his design for retrofitting a staysail stay. I think this would be called a cutter inner forestay rather than a solent stay which would be further forward. I'm not sure which is better. I'm interested in the solent stay too in the future but I'm not sure I want to deal with running backstays- have never had them or used them.

The deck attachment of the stay is a custom chainplate through the deck that attaches to the aft bulkhead of the anchor locker, with instructions to double the plywood full width and depth of the Anchor well, with 3/4" plywood, epoxy and cloth. The chainplate is cut from 1/4" SS plate in a sort of upside down T-shape. The chainplate is actually bolted inside the anchor well. The tang goes through a slot cut in the deck and then is bent aft at 20 degrees. The drawing also has the sizes and specs for the rigging and gives the design of mast fittings for the stay and for the running backstays. He says to use an ABI Quick Release Lever but I believe they are out of business.

The drawing "Sail Plan" shows the dimensions of the staysail. It appears to be lower and further aft than what Terry described for his. The stay is parallel and 4.5 feet from the forestay and intersects the mast about 14 ft below the masthead and 8.5 ft above the spreaders. I suppose with it that low you need the running backstays.

Ted Brewer has a website and appears to be still selling books and plans, and I think it would be good to support him but let me know if you cannot get them.

I purchased that set of plans from him last year. He is still around, I chatted with him a bit on the phone. The complete set is worth the expense IMHO.
