Small Holes on Both Sides of Hull below Anchor Locker?

jpancake

John A. Dery
On my 1983 Morgan 384, t.There are two small holes, about 1/4" in diameter just below and aft of the anchor locker drains on both side of the hull. Can anyone tell what these are?
Thanks,
JOHN

I have a 1983 M-384 and have no such holes..
I double there were factory holes .
There are upper anchor locker holes.
I have cut thru my top anchor locker with a saws all and have one large locker. Installed a false bottom 1/2 inch from the real bottom and slanted it and drilled a drain hole.
I'm going cruising so i need two anchors and i split the locker the long way . Now i store one anchor with all chain one side and the rode on the other..
I'm WindRose Tarpon springs/Clearwater ! Lee

Lee - How far above the waterline is your new lower locker drain? Did you install a check valve? It seems a low drain would be submerged my a bow wave.

Maybe 12 inches and yes but a small hole will take time to fill not like its one inch Mine is 3/8 so the water does drain back out.
I have a salt water deck wash and i just flood the anchor locker and it all runs out and with the lid open it all drys.

Here are pictures of mine. You can see the 'upper anchor locker', which stores the Sea Tiger windlass, and the port and starboard drains for that space.

yes my upper drains are in the same place i epoxied mine shut from the inside.. Just to stop the wasps !
My only drain now is 12 inches from your black boot top stripe.
I use a Lofrans windless manual. I cut my locker door port to starboard so 2/3 open and the other third my winch will be attached too. just so the chain falls.
I'll do pix when i'm done.. but the resizing will always get me in trouble.

The upper anchor locker drains in Lee's photos look exactly like the holes I was referring to. I think I've figured it out - I'm guessing a previous owner added two other anchor locker drains, complete with plastic thru-hulls. So I think I might have four - two on each side.
Thanks,
JOHN

Steve Cundy -

Looks like you have a Simpson Laurence Sea Tiger 555 manual winch, is that correct? I have one as well, that I've not yet installed. Does it work well for you, and did you need to modify the locker doors to have it fit?
I am concerned that the angle of the chain, coming from the bow roller, will be too high an angle to avoid any skipping off the gypsy.

I have a lofrans royal manual mounted on the deck. and blocked up 3 inches.
I cut the locker doors 2/3 and winch sits on the back 1/3 locker door that is now sealed to the deck.Forward part still opens to push down chain piles.
All my angles have been tried before i made every thing fast.
I have a chain stopper to that is used as a gipsy guide. Give me a few weeks and i'll take and post pix of all of it !!! Lee

Matt, yes that's a Simpson Lawrence 555 Sea Tiger manual windlass that came installed as shown when I bought the boat.

I'm assuming that my doors are original for a Morgan 382. It doesn't appear that they have been modified, although there's a 'V'-shaped opening where the front of the doors meet. I just don't know. Does anyone have pictures of original Morgan 382 anchor locker doors?

As yet, I haven't had opportunity to operate the windlass. However, I believe I'll need to modify the installation, as you can see that the chain is wearing the deck in front of the doors. Also, the chain might jump the gypsy as well.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Pilgrim, 1979 M382 Hull# 115, has a single hinged anchor locker door.

Not sure if the installation is original or a replacement.

We also have a Simpson Lawrence 555 Sea Tiger that we used for 9 years on our M34. We are very pleased with the windlass. We plan to modify the anchor locker door and deck mount the windlass on Pilgrim.

Jeff, thanks for the pictures.

Arrrgh-O's ground tackle is setup differently - bow roller to port, instead of to starboard, etc. I'm not sure what that means.

I like your GRP door.

My anchor locker door was removed and the deck glassed. A couple of hause pipes were installed for the rode and chain to enter the locker. The windlass, also a Seatiger 555, is mounted on deck.

Thomas -

Did you divide the locker in half along the centerline?

My plan / hope is to cut the door leaving the forward 2/3 as a locker. The aft 1/3 will reinforced and glassed closed with a hause pipe leading down to the lower locker.

I would like to see an image of your set up. Could you post one or send one to me in an email (jeffalovett@gmail.com)

Thanks

No Jeff, it is divided fore and aft. I'll try to take some photos and post them. The glass work on the deck is far from perfect. I assume the previous owner did it himself.

Here are a couple of pictures of my deck without the anchor locker. Under the deck, the locker is divided fore and aft.

Nice work, feels great to have it behind you i'll bet !
The welder still has my anchor roller. He is coming back this wednesday to figure out some kind of chain deflector before i seal it all up .
great pix..

Thomas, thanks for posting the images. I'm very tempted to go this same route and simply eliminate the upper locker completely.

Like Jeff, the more I ponder this issue, the more I'm leaning towards entirely closing off the deck anchor locker.

In my opinion, the argument for maintaining the deck locker aren't very compelling.

As for the anchor locker doors on the 382... I'm convinced that the locker lids varied from hull to hull. I have an '81 382, #257, and the lid is different in size, style and placement than other photos I've seen.

My lid is so small that my manual windlass is mounted behind the lid, on deck and is still several inches forward of the aft locker bulkhead. It doesn't appear to be modified at all. Both previous owner's deny having done any modifications to it.

Here is the photo.

Windlass is not that expensive, it's wiring and labor that adds to the cost. Think of your back and trying to raise the hook in an emergency situation. To me, money well spent! To each his/her own opinion on a windlass. I vote electric!
