Self-tailing 16 on mast

cavale

JIM & MARGE HUTCHISON
<div>I use my main halyard winch, Lewmar 8 single speed, to raise my inflatable dink onto the foredeck for storage. It would be much easier to do if the winch was a self tailer. It appears that the smallest self-tailer available on the market is a 16ST. Has anyone replace this winch on the mast? (ie. any problems?) And would anyone have any ideas as to where I might find a slightly used 16ST.Jim Cleary, "Dana" 382 #53

You might think about installing rope clutches on the mast. Rope clutches I have installed work great.

I had the same problem. I solved it by getting one of those blue rubber self tailers found in all of the marine catalogues and most marine stores. They come in various sizes and I found one that fit.
Hope this helps you.
An alternative is to find someone on the dock and offer them a beer to tail. Both systems work.Capt. Bob

Jim,
There is an outfit in the Boston vicinity that specializes in used equipment. I have made a few very good purchases from them. They are always at the Atlantic City Show. Can't think of their name now, but it will come to me. I will post it or perhaps E-mail you.
By the way, we have met and been aboard each others boats in Oyster Bay, Centre Island. I'm 382#155 Southerly. You are the person who told me about this web site. THANKS.
Larry

I removed a lewmar two speed off the mast to clean it up and also because I thought I was going to replace it (I didn't in the end.) Anyway, I had to have the screws drilled out and retapped because they had been there so long the corrosion had set them into the mast but good. I have heard various remedies for this, none of which work in the long term, I suspect. I would recommend dyou look at Anderson for a winch. I got a little one, nonST, and they are very nice machines.

The name of the company you are thinking of is Marine Exchange and they are on Rt 1 in Peabody I can't find there phone number right now.

The people larry was talking about is the Marine Exchange, 202 Newbury St, Rt. #11 South, Peabody, Ma 01960-3806. Phone # (508) 535-3212. Ask for Kevin. They have a lot of used stuff and will be able to help you find what you need.
But the rubber self tailing attachments in the catalogues solved my problem and it cost me $8.00. Go with the simple solutins first. K.I.S.S = keep it simple stupid. I redid my whole boat using this theory. Look for the simple solutions first.

Jim,
I remembered the name this morning. It is Marine Exchange Corp.. You can call them at (800)888-8699. I called them to make sure I had the right outfit. They do not have a s/t16 now. They are always making deals and trades. You should keep in touch with them.
Good Luck, Larry

Thanks for the info on the Marine Exchange people. I'll let them know I'm in the market for the winch and see what they can come up with.
I certainly remember visiting with you and Diana at West Harbor this summer. After the weekend I wanted to call you with the address of this Board but could not find the sheet with your address & number. Swore it went into my logbook. I'm glad to see that you found the site. It really is a great place for getting and sharing M-38 info.
Looking forward to chatting on the Board and to seeing you again this summer on the water.Jim
