Rigid Vang

Has anyone installed a rigid vang on your boat ? If so, were you able to install it so that you can still open the cabintop hatch with the vang connected ? I was planning to get a Garhauer rigid vang, but from my measurements it doesnt appear that I could open the hatch with the vang installed .

I can open the hatch, but not all the way. You can always pull the pin and use a spare halyard. I like the ridgid vang.

I believe all the hatches used are designed to be opened both ways (toward bow or toward stern). You may have to move the brace. I had a Garhaur rigid vang on an earlir boat and liked it very much. In addition, you can't beat the price.

Bill;
I installed a Garhauer rigid vang on my 382 about two years ago and have been very happy with it. The hatch only opens at the front and hits the vang. I can swing the boom to one side when in port to open the hatch wider if necessary.

I installed a Garhauer rigid vang on my 383 and like it very much. The stock vang was a bit too long given my mid-boom traveler that uses three bails on the boom so Garhauer took the vang back and shortened the tube based on my measurements so now it works well, does not interfere with the main sheet or the hatch opening. By the way, Garhauer made the customization of the vang at no charge, even absorbing the cost of shipping both ways.

I gave Garhauer the measurements of my M382 mast, boom, and hatch installation and asked them if they could manufacture a rigid vang that would fit in without interference with the hatch, yet work properly. They said, "No problem". Not only did Garhauer custom manufacture the rigid vang plus boom mount for my Hood Stowboom, but they also make a custom saddle for the mast mount. When I wasn't quite satisfied with the fit of the mast mount, they made a new one and shipped it to me overnight at no charge. When my heavy Stowboom seemed too heavy for the springs inside the vang and I expressed concern about this, they immediately shipped a new heavier duty spring section to me, again at no charge. It turned out that the original springs that they had selected for my installation were just fine.
The vang has performed flawlessly and clears the hatch with room to spare. Best of all, the entire package cost just $340 and comes with a 10 year unconditional warranty. It's hard to go wrong with Garhauer.

Thanks for the input. Sure all of you don't work for Garhauer ? <g>
I had no idea they would be a cooperative as all of you indicated as far as customizing for your particular needs. Will do my measurements and get in touch with them.
Comparing to any other vang I've checked, theirs seems to be a super bargainBill
