Propeller size

It has been sugested to me that My boat is over proped. I obtain about 7 knots at 2000 RPM with a Perkins 108 and a 1.9 reduction gear. The book says that the perkins should run about 3000 RPM. The propeller is 16in. dia. 11 inch pitch.
What is the right size propeller for a Morgan 38-2/4? This is a three bladed fixed prop. When the feathing prop is figured out I would be interested in the size and make.

The prop is similar to what other boats are using; I have
seen 16RH11, 16RH12, and 17RH12 and all seem to be satisfied
with performance. A German SailProp will probably fit if you are willing to spend $2500-$3500 for a 1/2 to 1 kt. in speed increase as well as the maintenance involved.

<div>Hi, been seriously looking at putting on an Autoprop. Agreed it's a lot of money, but of all of them, it has the least amount of maintenance. The biggest thing is higher speeds at lower RPM's that's intriguing me. I figure the smoother engine power and reduced drag will make a big difference as I take off for blue water this fall for 2 years.Does anybody have one on their boat? I'll be pulling the boat next week for bottom paint and will put a template in the clearing to make sure it'll fit. Any suggestions?

My neighbor put one on his Freedom and has had constant problems with inconsistency in performance. It sometimes works very well and then the next time he uses the boat, it vibrates so that the engine seems to be jumping off the mounts. The AutoProp is now off the boat and back to the factory for a second 'tuneup'.

<div>The Auto prop does not fit. Due to the rotation of the blades around their axis, the blades will hit the rudder. The only feathering props that can work will have to be ones that turn "on" their axis.I've de-pitched my 18RH11 to a 18RH10 for my Yanmar 3QM30F. That should give me about 200 more rpms and put me back in range with the Yanmar speed of 2800 rpms.

Oops forgot to tell you that it's a 2 bladed prop. An 18" is about as big as you can go and maintain the "3 finger" clearance.
