The aft most cabinet in the galley doesn't really have a lot of room to store items. We removed the door, shelve and cut away part of the facing to be able to place a small microwave in its place. The microwave sits square with the hull which gives better access to the door and extends outside the cabinet face. Mounted the microwave on a platform of 3/4" plywood for support. Bought longer screws for the microwave legs and brought them through the platform from the bottom to tie the microwave in place.
The previous owner of my 382 installed the micorwave next to the door for trash behind the ice box. He cut a whole in the aft bulkhead, trimed it with teak, built a shelf in the cockpit locker to support the mirocwave of 3/4 plywood and bolted the mircowave to the shelf. His installation took up no room in the gally and only a minor amount in the cockpit locker. Accessability is not bad.
The two locations mentioned would both work fine for a new installation, but I wonder if anyone has worked out an installation where the microwave would go in new cabinetry installed above the galley counter to port of the sink, with the cabinet back even wtih or a little forward of the galley sink bulkhead? If a small enough microwave could be found, it might be possible to install it this way, plus some upside-down wineglass storage might be added underneath such a cabinet. Any thoughts or comments?
