Perkins 4108 zincs

capnrichard

Richard Illmer
I've looked all over for a sacraficial zinc on the raw water
side of the cooling and havn't found one and don't seem to see
anything on it in the manual. Anyone have some clues to if and
where it can be found?
Thanks,
Rod

I had a mechanic take a look at my 4-108 last year because I couldn't find the zinc, and neither could he. He said that some of the 4-108s don't have them. Given that my engine has over 2000 hours on it and has been in use for 16 summers without any noticeable corrosion in the heat exchanger, I guess it doesn't need one.

Rod,
I had a zinc replaced in the raw water side last year when I was hauled out. It was located on the rear of the engine in what appeared to be a "tube" of about 3" or 4" diameter. and about 12" or so long. The end of the zinc looks like the 1/2" hex head of a bolt located on the port side end of the tube. When unscrewed, a "pencil" shaped zinc is (or what was left of it) is connected . I couldn't find an exact length required, so I obtained one from marine supply, correct thread size and cut it off to the proper size, which isn't too difficult to figure, if it's too long, the threads won't tighten completely.
Good luck.Fred,

I recently attended a diesel engine class conducted by the diesel doctor in Annapolis. The engine we used for the demonstrations was a Perkins - lucky for me. One thing that came out during the class was the lack of a zinc on many Perkins engines. The heat exchanger used on many holds the interior portion of the exchanger on both ends with the rubber fittings. This eliminates the dissimiliar metal and the need for a zinc. If you have this type of heat exchanger, the worst thing you could do would be install a zinc, because you would introduce the very problem the zinc is designed to correct. Sounds like you have this type heat exchanger - it is a good one.

I am interested in purchasing a perkins, rated for between 50 and 65 hp. i need to know if the 4-108 has sleeved cylinders. i would also like to know where i can get info on the fuel consumption of this engine at service speed.
