New M382 Owner -Hello Everyone

After spending hours consuming information from this fantastic resource and community. We are pleased to join your ranks. We purchased SV Pilgrim a 1979 M382 Hull#115.

Since circa 2001 her home port has been Sandusky, OH. In the 1990's she was sailed out of Miami / Ft. Lauderdale as SV Pupa.

Our beloved 1966 M34, http://sv-cestlavie.blogspot.com/, which we have refit and traveled on since 2005 was totaled in a dismasting off the coast of South Carolina last summer.

We had planned to spend 2 to 3 years cruising in the Caribbean aboard C'est la Vie beginning last fall. The loss of C'est la Vie placed us in the market for another vessel.

We narrowed it down to Bristol 35.5, Tartan 37, and Morgan 38X. After visiting all three designs. The Morgan 38X went to the top of the list.

After many delays in overland transport, SV Pilgrim arrived in Beaufort, NC yesterday. We are excited to dive into our project list and will document our progress with both projects and travels on our new blog link{http://m382pilgrim.blogspot.com/, M382Pilgrim.blogspot.com}

Good looking boat Jeff! Good luck with your new project. Be careful when the yard blocks the boat under the keel, no blocking under the holding tank area aft of the lead.

Welcome to the board. We will always be interested in your progress as you work on your boats. If we can help with answers to your questions just ask them. Somewhere along the line one or more of us has tackled the same issues you may have. We'd love to help.

Any M38x owners active on the board that are located the the Beaufort, NC area - Oriental, New Bern, etc?

I've been looking around marinas & docks in the area, but have yet to come across another M38x in the area.

Yes I have Tommy, I am in slip 227 at Prieto, we may try and take a sail today after church if the weather holds. supposed to be sunny and 60+,... but I have 3 women in my crew so anything can happen between now and then!

Congrats on your new baby!

I liveaboard my 382, Celerity, at a marina on Jordan Creek, off Pungo River, about 6 miles south of Belhaven.

I have had Celerity since early 2003 and agree that they are terrific boats.

If not before, maybe we'll cross paths in the spring/summer if you will be headed north on ICW....I plan on heading back to the Bay.

We are currently hauled out in a yard adjacent to Jarrett Bay Boatworks along Core Creek.

We plan / hope to have Pilgrim in the water by the end of April. Spend the summer aboard getting to know her.

I installed the inverter/charger on the inside of the starboard cockpit seat back. I used carriage bolts and 5200 to secure a piece of plywood, I then secured the battery charger to this board.
Like you I had a rotted battery compartment floor. Cut out all the wood. Kept the batteries there, but I glassed cleat boards to the hull to hold the battery boxes in place.

Thanks for the info and the welcome.

We have committed to moving the house bank to under the center line settee bench just forward of the galley. We currently have 4 6volt batteries, but I am fabricating a battery box that will allow us to expand to 6 6volts if necessary. I plan rebuild the shelf under the quarterberth for the starter battery and use some of the surplus space under there for large gauge wiring (i.e. positive post, battery combinder, fuse, battery monitor shunt, etc.

Not sure where we will put the inverter / charger. We have removed the quarterberth headliner and discovered the lost continent of storage space. Your mounting option seems good. Did you put the headliner back in the quarterberth after mounting the inverter/charger?

We utilize your "lost continent " in the quarterberth overhead to store rolls of paper towels. The space holds about 18 rolls. We cut in a 7x7 hatch to access the rolls. It's a great place to stow lightweight stuff.

I had a shelf built that runs full length of the quarter berth..it's in that "lost" space where hull curves out...still plenty of room for sleeping.....

I installed my inverter on the aft end of the shelf...shelf is just wide enough for the inverter to fit sideways....with plenty of storage room to spare.

The shelf was extended into the nav station area....with a second smaller shelf above it. Has been great storage space for cruising guides, chart CD's etc....

Jeff I have not yet replaced the headliner. When I do it will probably be spilt into multiple sections. Like Mel, I have a shelve that runs the length of the quarter berth. I did add a section to the instrument panel that now extends into part of the quarter berth. I will try to get some pics for you but that won't happen till next weekend. In addition, I ripped out the hull lining (I call it the mold generator). I glued in 1/4 in. cleat boards, added aluminized bubble wrap insulation in between the cleat boats then used smooth fiberglass panels from Home Depot.
There is another post where I posted pictures of the headliner I made. The material in the original headliners must not be in good shape. On my boat they had used foam on the edges that had all turned to dust.

Thanks for all the ideas.

No yet sure how we will utilized the space in the quarterberth. We will spend some time aboard before committing to any permanent changes. Do plan to clean, add some tabbing, & paint all services.

All other ports in Pilgrim are updated SS NFM. The quarterberth port is original plastic. I am planning to pull it out and cover opening with 1/2" thick tinted acrylic.

P/O already constructed a 3/4" teak panel that seals up the berth and acts as a backrest for navigation station.

Jose - I'm currently in denial that we will need to replace all the headliners, too much on the project list already. Baby steps.
