M384 water in stern locker underway !

That locker with the wooden locker lid. The one with the hole in the bottom. !
i remember some one added a piece of hose a foot or so did that stop the water coming in ?? Don't ya need some sort of one way valve.
I know you guys solved this problem before.
Since i added davits, a dink and engine to the rail she sits heavy in the stern and with the prop going it makes it worse..
I have a stopper with a stick attached but it always works its way out. ! I know i can glass it closed !

Lee--
I use a "T-handle" screw-in rubber plug designed for a drain hole in a dinghy. West Marine has them. I have it mounted on the end of a PVC pipe like you. Whenever I run the engine I screw in the plug. Keeps the water and diesel soot out of the locker.

I was the one that added a six-inch hose into the hole. Several people asked me why I have a hose on the back of the boat going into the water. I tell them it's a man-boat!

The new (more powerful) engine has a lot less soot than my old Perkins. Additionally, the mechanic put a flop-valve to deflect the exaust away from the hole, which has been very helpful in reducing/eliminating the backflow of soot into the locker. But the hose has done the lion's share of removing the problem. Since I only store fenders in the locker, it's not really that big a deal if water gets in there (the soot was another matter - it covered the fenders, which would then "paint" the hull when in use).

Plus, the new engine makes the boat squat down in the stern, so the water forms a blockage from the backdrafted soot (if I'm cruising at flank speed).

Sorry, it was a six inch long piece of a 1 inch hose... it fit snugly, which certainly reduced, but did not eliminate, the inflow of water. When underway, the squatting boat means the water rises in the hose above the end of it. A longer hose (18") will solve the problem.

The hose can be removed easily for normal draining.

I have a M38-2, built in 1978. My stove is pressurized alcohol, so the aft-most locker is used for fender and line storage.

Some have it as a propane storage area, some do not.

Interesting probably why i never noticed if it gets water in it or not. I do not store stuff in there. I dont want to run the risk of blocking the lower vent hole in case of a leak. Also explains why i have to use 10 lb bottles rather than the 20 lb everyone else gets to use. i hate the steel one but im stuck with them i guess. I even bought a 20lb aluminium and had it re certified only to find out it wont fit through the hatch...
