Hull Numbers

buddy

Buddy Edwards
I am in the process of buying a 1983 M383. The sail has no
numbers. Looking at the series of numbers on the stern it is not
apparent what the hull number is. Can someone out there decipher
the code for me? Thanks email fcbob@cwix.com

Bob
The hull identification number on my hull is
"MRY22053M78H"
The MRY is for Morgan Yachts, the 053 is the hull number and the 78 is the year it was built. The rest is a mystery to me but this may help you decifer your number.
Dana is a 382, hull #053 built in 1978.

<div>Thanks Jim. My boat's number is MRY33024M82G383. Putting together your info and the info off my last boat, a Catalina, it looks like my hull is # 24 manufactured in March 1983. I plan on joining the M38 organization. There will be a total of six of us in the Jacksonville area with one of them being a 1971 Charlie Boat. The owner of that one has it in ablosute mint condition. It is a real gem. My boat (we will close on it in a week or so) ois in very good shape too, but not quite mint. Thanks again Jim, hope to meet you some time. Bob

Bob: Your original posting implied that you were looking for sail numbers, not hull numbers. Sail numbers are assigned by USSailing, or through the authorized sailing authority in your area. For example, US Sailing authorizes the Detroit Regional Yacht Racing Association to assign sail numbers. US Sailing sets aside a particular number group for each area. If there is no authorized association in your area you contact US Sailing direct and they assign the number. Once the boat is assigned a sail number the number stays with the boat forever, regardless of ownership. Hull numbers are not sail numbers. You can reach US Sailing @ www.ussailing.org, fax 401 683-0840. Portsmouth, RI

<div>Thanks for the come back. Sail numbers conform to the hull numbers. At least that is the case in PHRF. Since the cipher indicates that the boat i am buying is hull #24 of the M383 line, my sail number will be either 024 or 24. USSail, of which I am a member has nothing to do with it so far as I know. The same is true in the Catalina line, Lightnings and Flying Scots, among others. Sunfish are assignid numbers by the Sunfish association. Through a prior answer I was able to iterpret what my hull number is. That is what I plan to use to number my sail. Thanks again, Bob

Bob: That's the first time I have ever heard that sail numbers conform to hull numbers. I have raced PHRF for over 25 years. Stella Maris is hull number 79 and my sail number is 15266 assigned by DRYA through US Sailing (formerly USYRU). Every boat in the Detroit area, indeed the Great Lakes, have numbers assigned by US Sailing or through the local governing race authority. I have seen other sailboats with numbers that could well be hull numbers, but they do not race. Go for it ! Jim Hudnut

<div>Jim and Bob,
My experience with hull vs. sail numbers differs a bit from Bob's. Yes, they may be different numbers! But, in those situations that I have been involved in, primarily one-design, the sail numbers are assigned by the class authority. And Bob, not all boats in the Detroit area have sail numbers assigned by or for US Sailing. I have personally overseen the assignment of many sail numbers in the Detroit area for one-design boats.
With that said, my experience with PHRF, (which I assume is the appropriate class for the Morgan 38 racers) is that the local PHRF handicapping group will ask for your hull and sail numbers when they assign a handicap. As long as your number doesn't conflict with someone else's, they certainly won't care. Hull numbers for the Morgan's certainly won't conflict as they are 3 digit numbers and USSailing numbers are 6 digits. Frankly, after what seems to be a zillion years of dealing with USSailing, I'm happy not to be forced into any relationship with them period.
Just my two cents. Mick

Your boat is a 1982 model. That is what the 82 between the M and the G means. Either the M or the G denotes the month but you need the guide to tell you. I don't think that part is simple but brokers usally know. the 383 at the end stands for the model which is 38 3, the later models would be 38 4.

Fellow Correspondents: I am getting a kick out of this discussion. Just read the follow up by MacMullen. It is true that with the one design classes most of them do assign numbers apart from USSailing, not all. Just received the 1999 DRYA Valid List (Yachts with assigned racing ratings that are current). 220 yachts are registered. Of that number 153 are five digit numbers assigned by USSailing or predessor USYRU. The prominent one design classes by and large use the numbers assigned by USS:J120's,J35's,C&C41's,NA40's,Catalina 38's Thomas 35's, Tartan 10's, Santana 35's. Those using class numbers are Etchells, Express 27's, Cal 25's and Crescents. One Morgan used the hull number 6846 a Charley 41, built in 68, hull number 46. The rest of the Morgans in the fleet use USS numbers. It appears that one design classes that are spread out over the country use numbers assigned directly by USS and carry numbers like US 35999, a Mumm 36, Tripp 50's etc. It is also true that if a guy wants to use his hull number or a special number he may be able if there is no conflict. Last of all, Regulation 14.1 of DRYA says:" All yachts competing in DRYA sanctioned regattas under handicap or meassurement rules must display US Sailing sail numbers to be assured of their finishing times being taken." I have srved on the PHRF C and D class committees several times and that is the way we do it in Detroit. No comment about US Sailing.

I think this is what you are after: MRY, of course stands for Morgan Yachts; 38 is the model; the next three numbers represent the numbered sequence of your hull in the respective series. For example my series begins "MRY38039...84", meaning my hull was the 39th Morgan 384 hull, and the model year was 1984. At least one of the other letters in that field represents either when the boat was started or when it was finished. This may not be precise, but it is close.
