ground plane in hull for SSB

I am attempting to install a SSB radio in XANADU M384 #047 and would like info on; using thruhulls, installing 3" copper strap, accessing below sole,
and general info on how you accomplished the task. Is there any way to access lead in keel

<div>Ron,I am NO expert, but here is how I installed my Icom. The antenna tunner is in the aft lazarette, and the radio itself is at the navigation station. I ran copper strapping from the tuner to the radio to the engine block and back to the tuner forming a triangle of copper strapping. Then I just hooked the tuner to the isolated back stay (I used end style stayloc fittings because I don't like short pieces of wire) and I was in business. I can't give any claims of range, but I communicated from the Bahamas to the states on a regular basis without problems. I seemed to have a good transmission and reception as other boats in any area where I have been.Enjoy your project.

Thru-hulls are a great addition to some copper stap but by no means a replacement. High Frequency signals (SSB)travel on the thin outer layer of the foil or stap thats why the it works so much better than just wire and a good grounding plate is also really a must to establish a good ground plane for the radio.
Good luck,
I intend to install a SSB on my own 83' 384 hull #009 as soon as funds alow.
