Unfortunately a relocation has left us to far from our 1979 Morgan 382. This boat is in good shape with some "new stuff", including sails, cockpit canvas and electronics. You can see the boat in the photo gallery (Rhapsody). The boat is located in Pennsacola, FL and we're asking $60,000. If you are interested please email or call 770-713-0777.

I am writing for a friend, Jack Gosline of Milwaukee Wi. He owns a Morgan 382 and is in need of a propeller for his boat. His original equipt. propeller it was discovered has a crack in the hub and is no longer useable. Im not sure of the pitch but it is the standard for the Perkins 4-108 from 1980.
Please forward any replys to me at serotini02@charter.net.

I have just put my M382 back on the market and it is seriously for sale.

It has been a tough decision to let her go, but I have not been using her that much and she needs a new home.

A ton of pictures can be found at http://www.americadirect.ws/Morgan382/m382.html

I am asking $52,000 but will consider any legitimate offer. This is your chance to pick up a great boat in very good condition with many upgrades and improvements.

Here's a detailed description:

1979 38' Morgan 382 sailboat for sale. Asking price $52,000. Vessel is docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For more information, contact Ed Nelson @ 954-772-2025 or email at ednelson@writeme.com

Over the past six years, this boat has been professionally refitted -- new Lee sails, new Anderson 46ST 2-speed self tailing winches, new cabin cushions, new wiring, new thru-hull ball valves, fittings and hoses, new cutlass bearing, repack shaft stuffing box, repack rudder stuffing box, new port lights with rain hoods -- all the items that make her faster, safer, more comfortable and easier to handle.

The mid-cockpit traveler was moved onto the cabin roof and upgraded with a Lewmar traveler. All the running rigging (main sheet, topping lift, reefing lines and main halyard are now led aft from the mast to the cockpit for safety and to enable the boat to be single-handed more easily.

Moving the traveler from the cockpit also made the cockpit safer and more comfortable as well as enabling the installation of a full Bimini top, new in 2004. In addition to the Bimini, it has a dodger and a full custom awning that stretches from the mast to the stern (for all-weather docktail parties).

Main Cabin: The layout is standard. On entering the cabin, to the port side, there is a U-shape galley consisting, clockwise, of an Alder-Barbour refrigerator-freezer, Galley-maid stainless alcohol stove and oven, storage bins, and double stainless sink with pressure hot & cold fresh water and manual fresh and salt water spigots. To starboard, is the chart table and oversized quarter berth, beneath which are stored the starting and house batteries.

Moving forward to port is an L-shaped settee with centerline table, which converts to a double bed. To starboard is a settee and behind it is a "pilot's berth," designed for a very small pilot, but excellent for a child to sleep in as it has sides to prevent a kid from falling out of bed in rough seas.

Moving forward to port is the head which consists of a manual toilet (and holding tank; sink and a separate shower. To starboard is a hanging locker and storage space.

Forward cabin: The main sleeping compartment consists of a large vee-bunk with insert; drawers and shelves, and an opening hatch. There is a lot of dry storage under the vee-bunks

The interior of the boat is all original teak woods and veneers in excellent condition as are the headliner and cushions.

Hull: The hull is in great condition, solid and strong as only Morgan made them. The was recently painted with ablative paint that is good for two years of minimal bottom cleaning as the slime and barnacles just flake off with the paint.

Dimensions are LOA 38'4"; LWL 30'6"; Bridge clearance 52'; Displacement 17000#; Ballast 6800#; Draft 5'4"

Sails and rigging: Primary: Lee Sails -- Dacron main, 130 genoa and storm jib, new in 1999, all in excellent condition. Lee genoa is affixed to the double track Furlex roller furling system. Also, there are two more mains and one more Genoa in good condition. Standing rigging and turnbuckles are oversized and in good condition.

Running rigging is all new in 2004. Rigging has been enhanced for offshore voyaging by setting two main halyard and two jib halyards on the mast that are led back to the cockpit.

Electrical/Electronics: Freedom 1500 watt inverter; a Garmin GPS; a Heart Interface panel/battery conditioner; a 140 amp alternator; two new ('05) marine starting batteries; a bank of four Trojan deep cycle "golf-cart" type batteries ('05); a Simrad (Robertson) 300 CX chorus autopilot; a Humminbird depth sounder and a Standard marine stereo.

Wind speed and direction gauges were tired and have been disconnected in anticipation of getting new equipment compatible with the existing Simrad/Robertson autopilot which is capable of steering by wind direction in addition to steering by the compass heading or GPS instructions.

Engine: Yanmar 3QM30F #82067 - this is the original 33 h.p. engine that has approximately 1800 hours on it and runs perfectly. It pushes the boat comfortably at six knots. Transmission: Kanzaki reduction 2.03:1 Propeller: 16X11 RH.

The 382 offers, without a doubt, the most boat per dollar that you could possibly buy. 382s are sea kindly, meaning they handle rough seas with ease, are so well balanced they can be trimmed to steer themselves without the autopilot. They are an excellent coastal crusier but capable of much more. Every season, dozens of them cross the Atlantic or head for Hawaii.

Call Ed Nelson @ 954-772-2025 for any questions or to schedule an inspection.

For anyone interested or know someone who would be interested there is a 1969 CM38 for sail in Clearwater for sale on craigslist.org for 29k. The add simply reads:

"Diesel, furling sails, ready to cruise ALL OFFERS CONSIDERED"

If this is the boat I think it is I've seen him sailing out of the Clearwater Municipal Marina on a number of occasions but never had a chance to talk with him. I was on the other end of the Island for a while.

New kid, new house, dreams fulfilled, time to move on. I'm selling my M-382 hull 161 (1979). Located Miami. Veteran of 2 transatlantics and ready for the next. I've had Calypso for 18 years and it is better today than when I bought her. At $57K she's not the cheapest but will probably save you money in the long run. Extensive cruising gear. Check her out at

http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/17374

Good luck and fair winds.

Oscar

Well, I couldn't do it. Apologies to Phillippe and other's who were keen on Calypso. This little exercize in selling the boat made me realize how much I still loved her! I am taking Calypso off the market for now. Maybe my dreams aren't fulfilled after all. Thanks for the complements and see you on the water!

BTW, Woody: is there something wrong with the way I blocked the keel? If the concern is the aft point, there is a very strong vertical support along the aft edge of the keel. I avoided the void where the holding tank is. However, maybe I've been doing something wrong. Please let us know.

Hi Oscar,
I was a little surprised when I saw the aft keel block. I was told by the yard I bought the boat at to never block anywhere under that tank section. It has also been mentioned on this board I believe in past postings.
Best of luck with your future dreams!

regards,
rich

Tony: What are you doing? I thought you would be a Morgan guy forever. I will talk you up here in New England, as I know of at least one guy who really likes the 38-?

Dick

Hey - Dick - nice of you to say that. Believe or not, I tied the knot 5 yrs ago, became landlubber, but the mrs' wants to move aboard to go cruisin' in 5 yrs - I don't want to do that on the 38, so we're looking at the 43cc, and a 462. Also looking at Brewer 12.8 in your neck of the woods, a Pan Oceanic 43 and 46 in the islands (I totally love Brewer's designs due to the functionality of everything he designed) and we've been a little tantalized by a Hans Christian 43.
Bottom line - livin' aboard was easy with just me, with 2, I can't climb in that V-berth, so we're looking for something with an aft-cabin.

Look at the Toshibas, Spencer or a cat. 2 hulls are good, lots of room and stability! It's hard to spill your drink!
Jim

Jim, you got hitched up and sailed off - how's it goin'? I've never even heard of those boats! I'm not much of a cat guy unless I was going to live in the islands, which I'm not...just yet.

A Toshiba 40 or a Spencer 44 are greats boats.

Don't be afraid of Cats! Shop around and sail the boat. On Cats, listen for wave slap noise @ anchor.

Jim

Tony: The Toshiba 40 was also know as the Baba 40, its very heavy, has a very large J with bowsprit and sails very well. It's a Bob Perry design, friend owned one for years and loved it. Had an aft starboard double that took queen size sheets as well as the V forward. they were/are imported by someone in the Maryland area. Happy Hunting

Dick

Sorry for not getting back sooner Tony. She has not listed the boat yet. Perhaps you could send me a phone number at shorton912@gmail.com and I will give your information to her. Its only been a couple of weeks and I'd rather not post her info here. Thanks !

Also - they have been cruising the carribean and simply stored the boat in May for hurricane season. You might be able to catch her before a broker becomes involved.

Wanted: Cutter rigged Morgan 384 or 383 by serious East Coast buyer. Private sale OK. Would like/can move promptly as financing unnecessary and wish purchase before seller needs lay up ashore for winter. Please call Michael at 718 273 0331 or email: mjnorth36@verizon.net. Thanks.

Tony--I recommend you also look at the old Peterson 44. Great sea boats, good design, afte cabin. Be careful of the later knock-off Formosa 46s. Some were okay, but some had problems, with teak decks. The owners have a web site.

Before you put a price on your Morgan you should look at the rest of the sailboat market. Check out what available in the $70,000 to $99,000 range. What I have seen does not come close to my Boat in design, how it is built, or most of all condition. I've seen some boats that I would not go down bellow on because I could smell the aroma from the cockpit. I'm talking about boats asking $125-$150.
If you are going to tell me that the market in Morgan's is in the under $50,000 range. Then my answer is THE MARKET IS SET BY US....THE OWNERS. Anyone who sees a Morgan 382-3-4 wants one. Every place we go, people come over to us asking about our boat.
Understandably, if your boat needs a lot of work I could understand a price adjusted for that.
My boat is not for sale. But I had to express my feelings. Do you really feel you are giving your boat the respect it deserves?
Larry

Larry - you're so right. Have you looked at a lot of the boats online - some are really crappy looking, I believe those should not be under $45k, but when guys put their boats in the 30s, man do they screw us guys who've maintained our boats.

Pricing is an interesting dynamic. I dabbled with 44' Morgan N-M where the dealer offered to take a trade. "Morgan 38X's have really gone down in value" was the first thing Gray & Gray said. Salesmanship, perhaps?

I looked at M38's on Yachtworld this weekend. Almost all were 1978 382's in the $40-45k range. We all have to realize our boats are 26-32 years old, some very tired. I have spent a lot of
"blood and treasure" refurbing, but most of all TIME. Not everyone is willing to make that "investment" these days.

That said, our Morgans are not some narrow-assed CCA boat from the 70's. I had one of those and think I'm now in sailing heaven from a room and comfort POV.

I also looked at a Catalina 42 Mk 1 last year. Low lifelines, no bulwarks and their usual build quality. Both my wife and I came away saying we like our Morgan better, despite the tighter accomodations.

The market now wants boats that carry beam far aft and the room it brings below and in the cockpit. We can argue the sailing merits, but more room sells new boats. Our resale value is a victim.

That said we can take refuge in replacement cost. Its got to be $150-250K. I'm after $50K+ if I sell MOJO. I hope I can get it. It's all supply and demand.

1980 Morgan 382 - asking price $25,000

Located in Falmouth, ME. Due to lack of time and needs of a young family I need to let her go. Included with the sale is an 11' dingy and a mooring in Handy Boat's mooring field.

Bottom was soda blasted and cutlass bearing replaced in 2009.

Detailed specs on Sea Hobo can be found at http://seahobo.com/page/boat/

Email: greg@reinbach.com

I see someone else forgot about the opening port in the aft quarter berth. That makes 6 if I am not mistaken.

Also, price seems really low, even if only in average condition.

Helene

Hi Helene,

Which port are you referring to exactly? Is there meant to be a port in the aft quarter berth? Or are you referring to the port above the nav station and it normally opens?

Priced low in the hopes of a quick sale.

Greg

Hi Greg,
On my 1980, M382, #218, there is a port in the quarter berth aft of the nav station that opens into the cockpit. Just a few weeks ago, there was a post here about how to hook up a portable A/C unit and vent it out that port. Check out the second photo in this thread:
http://morgan38.org/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?1/18118

I am thinking of replacing my original plastic ports with SS, and I would have sworn that I only needed 5 until I saw that post.

Helene

Hull #002 was made without that port, and it was added by the original owner Joel Palmer, who shared the idea with Morgan and after that they starting adding it. Best part is the light and ventilation.

FYI only; a little history

Carl
I guess we are going off-topic, sorry

Carl: Your history was interesting, 38-2 # 074 no cockpit portlignt.

I also think the price is very low.

Dick

Everything depends on the market area and what has been done to the boat but I do agree, it seems under priced. It does show very well and a good boat to begin the input of $$$$$s and love!
Jim

This is the list of items that I see as needing to be addressed;

- replace main sail
- replace hatches, they are currently leaking
- inspect rudder, diagnose corrosion and repair as recommended
- fair the crack in the aft end of the keel/hull joint
- service engine
- bottom coat
- fix crazing on transom
- replace lifelines
- refinish wood trim
- get cushions for forward berth
- there is a leak in the starboard water tank at the join with the inlet

Hi Laura, in my opinion it is still under valued but it depends how motivated you are to sell. It does sound like a great buy for someone!

Good Luck.
Jim

IMHO,
25k seems a little high considering the the amount of work and money it needs. You will need to keep and enjoy the boat for a long time to justify the expense.
I think a m382 with good sails, strong engine nice cosmetics, new electronics.is never going to be worth more than 50-60k.

We are seriously considering putting an offer on 1979 382 #144. The boat's name is Sirius. Does anyone have any knowledge about this boat?

I don't know Sirius but I have my COURANTE Morgan 382 for sale in Annapolis,MD ready to sail away. Here's a website you can check her out:

http://iso-100.com/morgan382/

or email me at:

carlfmillerATgmailDOTcom

I'd be happy to hear from you. Maybe I could make a better deal.

Carl Miller

Carl - that's a very nice write up on your well found vessel. If I didn't already have one....

An owner who takes "loving" care of his boat is the one to buy. As opposed to an ignored/neglected boat. Ask me how I know! Good Luck in the sale. / Dave

Well, we have decided against purchasing Sirius. We have, however decided to look for a Morgan 382 as we like the boat. We live in Ontario and are planning on docking the boat in Belleville on the Bay of Quinte.
