Cutlass Bearing Re-visited

<div>I have just finished replaceing my cutlass bearing. I had no
problems thanks primarly to all of the help provided by you all.
I just wanted to say thanks for the help. Dick K., mine was like your - the bearing had no set screws. It
took a little time to cut out but no real problem. In the "for what it's worth department". To remove the coupling
from the shaft I used 4 pieces of threaded rod with a deep well
socket placed between the shaft and the coupling on the engine as
a "puller". It came off fairly easy but was time consuming. Thanks again for all your advise.Vic Copelan

I'm in the process of replacing my cutlass bearing as well. Mine is the set screw version (M-384 hull # 9). A mechanic showed me a simple way to remove it. In my case rudder & Prop/drive shaft had been removed as well as the stuffing box. Then the drive shaft was inserted backwards through the bearing (treads towards the eng.). A coller the size of the drive shaft tube was put on the shaft and then the prop nut. This makes a nice ram that will pop the cutlass bearing out. Works great if all the pre-existing conditions exist.
