Bottom paint amount

Greg Gruner
Hi folks. I am painting the bottom of my Morgan 382 for the 1st time and need to know about how much paint is necessary for one coat. Thanks!

Depends on what paint you use... Ablative needs more quarts, the thinner hard paints require less. I would use the Interlux painting guide - I found it a huge help in calculating how much paint was needed when I re-did the bottom several years ago.

i have found that the air temp will make a considerable difference in the amount of paint required. pick a nice warm sunny day and the paint will spread. i have been overanxious and the same interlux paint was like putty. i even warmed it up to help the spread. of course, my experience is in cape may where our spring is delayed by the water temp of the ocean and delaware bay which really affects our weather. may be different where you are. here's to an early spring.

I haul out every other year. The boat is 6ft draft and is in SF bay for 6 months and the other 6 are in fresh water. I have done my own bottom for the last 20 years prior to that I had the luxury of having it prepped and sprayed. I use 1 gallon of Trinidad SR thinned with 1 gallon of blended thinners. (75% T10 brushing thinner and 25% Penetrol). Rolled on with a 1/4" and tipped off with a 4" brush. I dive the boat about 3 times a year. This method was suggested to me by a group of tightwads. I have been happy ever since.

I use 3 gallons of Trinidad Red. It works well in Florida for year round protection. It is not good if you dry dock your boat for the winter, looses is effectiveness if it dries out for too long.

I last hauled out 10 years ago. Other than an occasional barnacle, I only have fowling where the paint has become thin from scrubbing. I scrub it completely during my annual Bahama trip to remove slime, fowling and old paint. This restores a fresh paint surface. During the rest of the year, I do regular prop and spot cleanings.
