Bird deterrent

tfrere

Thomas McNulty
My decks have been the target for lots of birds lately. A couple of years ago, I ran a nylon string from shroud to shroud in front of the mast about 3" higher than the spreaders. It worked to keep them from landing on the spreaders until it broke. They still landed on the masthead so my decks weren't poop free.
I was talking to a friend who is part time cruising. He keeps his boat on a mooring at Port St Lucie during the summers and has told me some Floridians told him to put mirrors on the top of the spreaders and masthead. They said it spooks the birds and they won't land. Anyone ever try this? Does it work. I'm afraid they may decide to peck at the mirrors like s parakeet.

I was thinking about just getting some cheap blind spot mirrors from the auto parts store and sticking them up there.

Your boat is in a perfect position for one of the latest innovations in bird deterrents. It's called "Alli-birder". You just catch a small to mid-sized alligator and let him roam the deck when your not on board. You'll never have bird poop problems again. And it's guaranteed for 10 years or until the thing gets too big for you to feed him. The only drawback is what do you do with him when you want to go sailing? It's also very intimidating at the starting line of your local Club races and in the bar afterwards. You get to take home a lot of silver. Of course if you find a smart gator you can teach it how to tail the jib sheets off the winches and save a lot of money on selftailers.

Tom: I fly a burgee at the mast head, and use dead CD disc's under one of the spreaders, reflects like the mirror's I think. Have stainless wire from upper shroud to mast same as you.
Like Jim's sense of humor.

The only problem with the gator is they poop too. Speaking of gators, they were out in full force this past weekend. I guess they're fattening up prior to hibernation. It's still in the low 80s here but very nice sailing weather.

Dick,
I'll try the CD. Certainly can't hurt.
