Autopilot Tiller Arm Attachment

<div>For those of you who have installed below deck autopilots, I am
seeking some info on the selection and attachment of the tiller
arm that is connected to the actuator and rudder stock. I would
like the specs used on an M383 application if possible. After
much deliberation, I have settled on the AutoHelm ST5000+
Sailpilot as middleground between the 4000 and 6000 (at least
pricewise). It seems strong enough and still affordable and I
hope I made the right choice. The tller arms made by Edson seem
to be the obvious choice athough adding another $300 to the
total price was not a welcomed discovery.I studied the photos posted to our site a few months ago
(http://www.navstore.com/autonav/) that depicted a below decks
installation and determined that an Edson 10" arm was used but I
couldn't figure out how it was attached to the stock. If anybody has pictures of their installation it would be
appreciated. Send by mail or email.Alan C. Tigner

I used no expensive tiller arm, but rather attached the drive directly to the quadrant. It's been there for 10 years in all sorts of conditions and performs fine. The unit is an Autohelm ST6000 and I've had no trouble with.

<div>Please send me pictures of diagrams of your installation. Although I've found no one that recommends (most discourage) this attachment location I would be curious as to how you did it. The rationale everyone used was that the quadrant was not strong enough to take the load of the actuator. Since my boat is up on blocks and under snow I haven't had a chance to study the steering assembly up close since I started this autopilot acquisition odyssey. I have a couple of other questions. Since I've changed my mind once again and will go with the ST6000 in order to leave no doubt on capacity, I would like to know where you mounted the various componentsfluxgate compass

Computer is mounted in aft quarterberth and compass is located in the wet locker (remember, no magnets or metal nearby.
