Mast steps : NO they do not go all the way up Half way to the spreaders. Just so my wife can be lookout for coral heads in the Bahamas .
the goal is 2018 feb or march thru may
Yesterday we had the first test of the new Anderson 28 2 speed mast winch . My wife 110 pounds with one hand raised the full batten main sail . Now she did use the slower better geared speed but she got it done . That self tailer peals the halyard just as it should . The halyard goes thru a rope clutch so no slippage of the process . And to take down the sail just release the rope clutch and with that FAST track, that sail drops right in the lazy
jacks , like a rock !.
On my Mast, I have an 8 on one side and a 16 on the other. A couple of weeks ago West Marine had triple points week. Also going on the same week, Lewmar had a two for one sale. I ordered two 15 EVO lewmar self tailing winches. Because the larger of the two winches is a 16, I felt that the Lewmar 15 would do the job to raise the Main. They are advertised as being a little smaller in construction than an older 15. I am planning on putting on the Strong Track system which should make raising the mainsail a easier.
Did I make a mistake with the size of the winches? Are they undersized? I plan to run the halyard to the cockpit and have one of the winches on the coach roof.
i ordered thru Barnical.com they put Anderson winches on sale . Every other place Price fixes Anderson ! The Fast track sure is the way to go .
I had Andersons on my Sabre .Yeah i fell in love with them. They just work and look good doing it !
John,
Those winches should work fine. I have a Lewmar 16ST on one side of my mast. The only issue is the self tailer did not accept the 1/2" halyard and I had to downsized to 7/16".
Thanks Thomas. Lewmar states that the line size range for the winches goes up to 1/2. Those Anderson winches are fine winches I must say. But two for one was a deal I could not pass up.
Mark Is Larry still paying to keep this blog going ? He sure is a First class guy , He does not easily accept Money help from us
for all the things he does for us ? I'm willing to donate, its just the right thing to do !
By the way, thanks for the recommendation on the Andersen winches. I put one on my mast to replace an original Lewmar non-self tailing, and it works & looks great. Now I want one on the other side of the mast too.
Thanks Ken (and Lee) for chipping in ... my server charges are coming up next month so I reckon I'll post a thread with my costs in case anyone has the ability to help out. I'll do that in the next few weeks.
Thanks!
-Mark
