Anchor Rode

tfrere

Thomas McNulty
Some folks believe in using an all chain anchor rode. On the gulf coast, the depths are shallow and holding is fine so all chain is overkill. I just purchased 50' of 3/8" BBB galvanized anchor chain to replace the chain that does not fit my windlass gypsy. I also need to replace the nylon rode. I am trying to decide whether to use 5/8" or 3/4".
Any suggestions? What are you using?

Along the East coast the depths and bottoms where we anchor vary considerably. So we have opted for an all chain rode on our primary anchor. It's a 45lb Manson Supreme with 250' of 5/16" HT chain. Our secondary is a Fortress FX-16 with 250' of 1/2" nylon double braid. The storm anchor is a Fortress FX-37 with 250' of 5/8" nylon double braid. The stern anchor (lunch hook) is a small Fortress FX-7 with 200' of nylon double braid. The secondary and storm rides both have a chain leader of 25' x 5/16" HT. The stern anchor has 12' of 1/4" chain. Our requirements for anchor and rode selection is what allows us to sleep good at night: "Too much is never enough".

Tom , < Just what kind of anchor windless do you have. ? I have a spare Lofrans manual 3/8 chain sprocket . I switched it with a 5/8 from GO 2 Marine.com

Thomas. Good to hear you are happy with 555 on M38x. Took the 555 off our M34 (where it had served us flawlessly for 9 years) and plan on installing it on Pilgrim. Great windlass!

Jeff,
My windlass works great but I'm having a hard time finding the proper chain for it. I thought my links were too long so I bought 50' of 3/8" BBB. It jams now. I think I'm going to remove the gypsy and bring it to a marine supply shop to try to find the correct chain.
Do you know what chain you are using?

Lewmar picked up the Simpson-Lawrence product line when they went out of business. You may have some success if you contact them. I used to have a S-L Express electric windlass that had a burned out motor. Lewmar was the only source for a replacement motor. Instead of finding the correct chain for your gypsy, you may be able to purchase the correct gypsy for the chain you have. Good luck.
