A funny story

Thomas McNulty
Here is a bit of humor for all of you:

My wife and I took our CPA sailing yesterday. Before we left the dock, he said to us that he never learned to swim. After we boarded I pulled out a life jacket for him to wear but he stored it near his feet. The weather was pretty calm with ~5 knot winds and he was not going to move so there was no real danger.

As we were approaching Lake Pontchartrain, he asked my wife '''are we going out there?''' to which she replied '''yes, of course.''' He then told her that he does not cross the Causeway Bridge (24 mile long bridge that crosses from New Orleans to Mandeville) because he is scared of water. At this point we both thought '''what the hell are you doing on a boat?''' A bit later when we were about five miles into the lake, he asked how far we were going to go. We replied, '''not much further.'''

After a bit he seemed comfortable as it was a very slow day. I then heard the bilge pump running and didn't think much of it until a few minutes later I heard it again. I went below and found water entering the bilge from the aft end. I first thought my shaft packing gland must have backed off. I removed the steps and saw the water was coming from the cover on the raw water strainer for the engine. My wife then asked what I was doing and I calmly replied '''we are taking on water.''' I think at that point his eyes almost popped out of his head. I had to reassure him that the leak was small and we were in no danger of sinking. I ended up closing the through hull and changing the gasket on the strainer and all was fine.

I don'''t think he will ever come sailing with us again.

Very funny......Just think of his version of the story is. What he is telling his friends about his near death experience.

Another bit of humor, while sitting at anchor or a mooring, can't remember which, in Cane Garden Bay, drinking rum drinks, and watching other boats coming into the harbor, we saw a large sailboat slowly coming in under sail with one person on the bow and another along side in a dink. The sails were dropped and the boat slowed to a stop. The guy on the bow proceeded to drop an anchor into the dink and the dink motored away towards shore but a little to fast and his foot or both feet, got entangled in the rode and he was ejected from the dink.

Meanwhile, the dink takes off full throttle towards the shore but makes a big circle back towards the sailboat. It hits amidship and bumps its way along the hull and then takes off again. Meanwhile the guy in the water swims back to the sailboat and tries to climb the anchor chain but the dink now returns to the sailboat and once again bumps along the stbd side and almost takes out the guy climbing! He tries to jump in but doesn't make it. The other guy on board is attempting to snag the dink with a boat hook with no success.

The dink again takes off and once again returns where the guy on the boat is lucky enough to jump in and secure it.

We later found out they had lost their engine and were trying anchor using the dink. It made for great conversation at dinner ashore and great entertainment from our cockpit.

I have been in cane Garden bay 3 x in my life and wish i could find a way back..
I just love the BVI and all its coves islands and hide a ways..
The Bitter End YC is always a treat .
I even got engaged in Trellis Bay !

I FOUND MY WATER TANK LEAK ! at the stern of the starboard 60 gallon tank. The fitting brass to pvc leaks .
To get access i cut for 3 hours with my Roto Zip thru 1/4 fiberglass and 3/4 plywood and more 1/4 fiberglass from the little locker just aft off the tank.
Tomorrows another day there is a 5x5 access hole now so you can at least see.
I had to remove the manual waste pump and some hoses just to attempt a 45 degree cut . I'm tired and stiff.
Onward and downward I always say ! lee

I'm also in Mandeville. At Cypress Cove Marina. It is the last marina on the north end of Bayou Castine. Is your boat in Prieto? I pass a M38 there everytime I go to the lake. Looks like someone is polishing the hull and doing a fine job.

I know where you are, I will be in Prieto I think, Bill Evans told me to check out your marina as well, boat is in Madisonville now, just in the process of buying, doing sea trial and survey this week. I have seen the boat you are speaking of, the Lonesome Dove? my email is hogdancer@aol.com feel free to email me I would love to hear any thoughts or advice.
Take care
Thomas

Looks like she's in above average condition to me. That's the boat that got me interested in M382s. He was asking about $65k at the time. Do you live in the Mandeville area? If so, I'll be at my boat the next couple of days. Come by and visit.

I'm in Covington but will ease by if I can, would love too, your a couple slips down from where the boat burned, correct? Wow, $65 I'm sure not paying that for it!

Yes, I am two boats down from Bill Evans. On the far end of the marina. My cell number is 985-209-5555. Give me a call first to be sure I'm there. Got a few projects to work on this week.
