3QM30 Transmission Information

Put This In the FYI Department....

A number of people had indicated to me that the transmission for the 3QM30 was "special" and not available. Since the choice between rebuild and replace for us 3QM30 folk will come sooner or later I decided to "go to the horses mouth" and ask Yanmar. Their answer is below and it ain't pretty. Treat your transmission like "gold." I have also written Hurth to see if they have any suggestions. I will post their reply if they do reply. Have any of you 3QM30 folk had to face the problem? If so what did you do?

Torrensen Marine's Response:

"The 3qm30 was spec'd with a KH 18 gear. This was a one time collaboration between Kanzaki (which makes most of the gears with Yanmar
>sailboat engines) and Hurth (which is used frequently with Universal and Westerbeke engiens). It is no longer available as a new unit. Rebuilding is possible depending on what is needed. Our distributor has one that maybe re buildable, it is currently in pieces.

Overall, the situation looks worse not better."

It would really seem ashame to have to give up and not rebuild a great engine like the 3QM30 because of lack of a replacement transmission. Yeck!

Things aren't as bleak as I originally thought. Below is a series of e-mails I got from Hurth. They can adapt one of their transmissions to fit the 3QM30. Details are below in the e-mail.

Thats the good news. I looked up the price of the HBW250 on their web site. Their price is about $2300 plus shipping my Transmission to them so they can make an adapter plate, making the adapter and shipping both transmissions back. A bit pricie....

Vic

"Hi Vic,

It will be similar, if we have your old transmission we can use it to make a
new mounting plate and at the same time design it so we get close to the
same dimensions as the old gear. Worse case scenario you may have to lift
the engine a bit. We wont know until we get the old transmission.

Take care.

Mark

P.S. I'll be out of the office until Friday June 7th so if you have any
further questions I'll be replying at that time.

Thank Mark. I am not at the "rebuild" stage yet but I am trying to figure
out my options. I hated the thought of chunking a great engine because of
lack of a transmission. It sounds like your suggestion may be a real good
option. Will the HBW250 and adapter fit in the same foot print as the HK18?

Hi Vic,

I'm very familiar with that transmission. Unfortunately I sold the last new
one here in the US. I used to work for the Yanmar distributor here in
Seattle about 7 or 8 years ago. I was trying to stock one because I had so
many calls for replacements. I received one on a stock order, when I placed
an order for another one they discontinued it. It's too bad because there
aren't many options available for replacements.

We could adapt an HBW250 to that engine. The problem in doing it is that
the KH18 transmission uses the flywheel housing adapter as part of the
transmission housing. We would have to fabricate a new housing adapter so
we could mount the Hurth gear to your engine. It's not impossible but I'd
have to have your old transmission here to use as a template. If your
interested I'd be very happy to assist you.

Thank you

Mark Miller

Subject: 3QM30 Hurth / Kawacki Transmission"

I am a diesel tech at a repair yard in Oriental, NC. We are currently retrofitting a 3QM30 with a new, current Newage PRM120 transmission for a customer of ours. I read through this thread while researching the swap and am writing to say, it's not that hard. The only part we have had to fabricate is the rear mount assembly to replace the rear mount brackets that bolt to the old trans. If anyone requires this to be done to their boat, email me. Transmission choices are not limited, we can adapt several different brands to replace the old KH18. I am thinking of offering a conversion kit including the Newage trans that should retail for just under $3000.00. Let me know if there is interest. We estimated a total rebuild of the KH18 to exceed that cost by 20% or more.

We repowered about 3 years ago with Universal 25 and Hurth 50 trans. The first trans failed at about 200 hours, the second at 400 hours, the third at 600. So far, trans have been replaced without charge, moving from a 50 to 100, which also failed, to another 100 with cooler. At 800 hours, this one is showing symptoms of failure just like the others. Each time, authorized mechanics have declared engine installaton and allignment good. Anyone else have similar problems? What did you do about it? I believe there must be something wrong with the transmission. One defective trans, ok. But 3, and maybe 4? We never had trans problems for 20 years with our old Hurth 150, which we still have in our garage. I wish it was back in our boat.

Hi John,
I may be all wet here: I read on some website where there was a max torque/hp figure for Hurth trans models. IF, I recall correctly, any Hurth under 150 was marginal (or undersize) for my Perkins 4-108.

Could that be the issue with your Universal 25?

Sounding like I need to replace the damper plate on my Kanzaki KH18 transmission mounted to my Yanmar 3QM30H. I'm looking for any helpful information including source for the part, part number, description of the process, etc.
1979 382 Alpinisto, Bellingham, WA

Austin: I have the complete manual on the 3Qq30 engine. It includes the KH 18 transmission. There is a part in the manual that is called a damper disk not plate. There is no other identifying part number. I am located in Marion Massachusetts so we are at opposite ends of the world.

In our part of the world the U.S. distributor for Yanmar is Mac Boring in New Jersey. Their phone number is 800-622-5364. They may be able to give you the name of the distributor in your part of the world. I can be reached at dickkilroy@Comcast.net.

As a follow up. Thanks, Yanmar calls this part a Damper Disk. I replaced mine with Yanmar 177090-03500. The part sold for $205 from my local Yanmar parts dealer. I replaced it my self in a short day. The most helpful tool was a 7" (smallest size) bottle jack to lift the engine back up to where it was. And yes, I did block the engine before detaching the transmission - it settled a bit.

Replacing this part silenced the rattle noise I had at ahead idle. The springs were very loose with much wear as the springs worked into the plate. Glad I replace before it broke into pieces.

Austin,
I am about to do the same thing you did with the damper disc. I have a 1979 382 "Buena Vida". Yanmar dealer in So. Cal. has the same part for $207. My problem is the transmission won't go into gear immediately. Mostly in reverse. I can tell when it does go into gear when I hear rattling from the tranny. My mechanic says he can replace the disc but no gauarantee it will solve the shifting problem. Any ideas? Did you have a shifting problem?
