382 Mast Partners

The mast was doing some pumping while sailing the other day. I checked the partners and found the mast moving fore and aft. The rubber like material that makes up the partners is probably shot and needs replacing. I would like to know from anyone that has replaced this material-what did you replace it with? As another question, what is the best way to eliminate any mast pumping in addition to replacing the partners and making a good tight fit there?

Andy: I asked Ted Brewer that question. He supplied me with 2 drawing's for solutions. The first was a turnbulkle that attached to the mast and would be thru boltedto the deck. I didn't like this one because it would tend to crush the core material in the deck. The other was a custom ring(alluminum) which rides on top of the rubber ring and has a thru bolt thru the mast which sets in ears on the alluminum ring. This was done to Vixen in 1992 and all has been fine. I would also look at the tabing in the head again. When you tighten the rigging after installing the mast thru bolt all is tightened up aaaaand movement goes away.

<div>As I was looking through the photo gallery I found pictures of what I think Dick Kilroy is talking about, you might want to check the following members photo gallery submission and send him an email. Name below! 1978 Morgan 382 #046 - Papeche

<div>Andy. Interestingly enough, I removed Njord's (1985 - 384) mastboot this year and discovered that it did not have any partners. The mast is free standing from the keel up. I am thinking about useing a product from Spar Tite (sp?) which is a two part, rubber-like compound that seals and supports this area of the mast. I also plan on installing something like what Dick discribed.Jay
