Welcome to this website/forum for people interested in the Morgan 38 Sailboat. Many of our members are 'owners' of Morgan 38s, but you don't need to be an owner to Register/Join.
Thanks Jim!
Rick, sounds like you were in an identical position to me. I’ll repair to get us through the season, then go for something new when the repair starts giving us problems.
Sounds cheap for a sail, good to know - thanks.
Agree with your comments Terry. Although it is a bit of a false economy, I'm going to repair as the new sail was quoted 5k+ excluding a sail cover. Decided that once I'm a more competent sailor / want to explore sailing offshore - I'll investigate a new main with a few reefs (as you've...
Jim, thanks for the advice and quick reply.
I'm popping to our local sailmaker tomorrow and will definitely be getting his advice / utilising his expertise! My understanding (from chatting to people from Bermuda) is that the local sailmakers here outsource the fabrication of new sails. I've...
Hey all,
Was out sailing last weekend and put a long spit down Vixen's mainsail. Unfortunately, the boat was way overpowered due to being hard on the wind, not spotting a squall and then not letting the main out fast enough. The sail is pretty tatty, bagged out and looks weak at some of the...
Thanks for your reply Capt Pete, fingers crossed ours do not need as much work - they're getting checked over by someone in the yard this week. We're hoping to be back in the water this weekend so wouldn't have the time!
Cheers Steve, we'll give the 3M a go. Sounds like a lot of work to do...
Thanks all for your advice.
After a few setbacks and learning we have the original gelcoat, we decided against repainting. As you've suggested Dave, we're going to buff / wax.
We figured some of you might be interested in what we've been up to / want to see a few pictures,
- repainted the top...
Purchased the boat in September - it’s not Dick and Judy Kilroy’s, just another Morgan called Vixen (more info on one of my posts in the Pub forum).
To be a little more specific about what we plan on achieving and what timescales, we’re not doing the engine ourselves. The plan is to have the...
Hi all,
Taking Vixen to a yard in a couple of weeks to get a Beta 38 installed (ordered last week and due to arrive 22nd Feb). Whilst we’re at the yard, she’s going to get hauled so we’ll be giving her a clean and checking all the seacocks. None have been used for years so they’re long overdue...
Mitchell,
Thanks for the suggestion. I completely agree, I think the next thing to improve (after the engine) will be that headsail, hopefully in time for summer...
Thanks for the advice Steve, i'll be sure to post future queries in the main forum. I've been discussing with Jay Green and both...
Jim,
Vixen came with some fairly old sails, the headsail was previously large but the previous owner had cut it down to approx. 100%, so I'm not sure it's the most efficient in terms of shape.
We struggled most when the wind picked up and the sea got choppier - I was hoping the wind would...
You’re correct - I have the basic model, just outside tracks. I’ll update you once I’ve cleaned her in the new year, hopefully that’ll do the trick.
Our engine is the original and very unreliable so unfortunately we always need to tow the tender in case it fails - I’m sure that adds a fair bit...
Thanks Jim. I’m hoping to give the port some attention as soon as the weather settles. Good point on the wood inside, looks like mine is already delaminated in many places so it’s now on the long list of things to tackle.
It did feel strange that she wasn’t coming around easily, the boat speed...
Lee / Mitchell,
How would you suggest that we apply the Butyl tape? Is it just over the top of the join between port and boat? Or should we unscrew, remove the port slightly, tape it up underneath and then screw back on? Cheers
Also, if anyone has any advice...
As you can see from our route, we were struggling to tack and a few times we had to gybe around instead. We noticed it was especially difficult as the wind picked up which seems strange - in about 15 knots, we were actually getting stuck in irons and going...
Hey Rick and Mary, yes - we purchased the boat out here in Bermuda. I relocated from London / Brighton for work and decided to try something different (got bored of City life). We knew a friend of a friend leaving the Island who was already living on Vixen, so purchased her with water catcher...
Hey Jim, thanks for looking into it - hopefully we’ll learn about her history one day. I felt some dampness around the sliding hatch so i will check that out first.
Hi Mitchell, I think ours maybe be coming from the same port. Let me know how all goes! Interested to hear about how you resolve...
Hi Mark,
Thank you - I’m very excited to join the Morganeer family! I think Vixen will have the same problem with mould / moisture. It gets very humid here and last night was our first experience of wet weather (25+ knots and lots of rain). In terms of issues, we noticed a slight drip opposite...
Hello all,
Me and my partner (Lauren) have recently purchased a Morgan 38-2 hull number 28 called Vixen. We are currently living on her in Bermuda - on a swing mooring. We’ve got a long list of improvements that we’d love to take on over the coming years and a quick read of the forums has...
