Pete told me about a 382 he surveyed that had run up on a reef in the Bahamas. The bottom of the keel was ground off exposing the lead ballast and holing the holding tank. Not a drop of water leaked into the boat which was sailed back to Florida and repaired.
I developed a relationship with Pete Brown when he surveyed my M384 in 1998. I learned much from him over the years. The ballast is a 1 piece, 6000 lb. casting of lead. It was lowered into the keel cavity. Then the cavity was filled with a slurry of marble dust and resin filling the...
I replaced the cutless bearing twice on my M-384 with Perkins and did not have to drop the rudder or move the engine. Can you remove the transmission? Would be a lot easier than moving the engine. I have two 1/4 in. by 1/2 in. bolts as set screws, threaded through the stern tube and into the...
Our masts were not made by Kenyon, but the booms were. The masts were made by what evolved into Johnson Sails, St. Petersburg, Florida. They have continued to change, and are now Island Nautical Maine Center, https://islandnautical.com/. Jack Corey work for Johnson Sails for years after...
Keefer,
I had similar problems. Six months after having my injector pump rebuilt, my Perkins started dying while motoring across the Gulf Stream on one of my annual Bahama trips. I would charge the Racor element and continued. The third time, I could not start the engine. I was 48 miles...
If your gudgeon is worn, my suggestion is to have a new one fabricated by a machine shop using the original as a guide. My original from my M-384 was different from Jeff's M-382 from which the above drawing was made. It is beefier. The "legs" on the forward side that slide into the notches in...
Inspirational job, Jim. Reinsulating the ice box is something I have considered. Now I may try your rebuild method one of these days. I like how you used the FRP panels from the old box and reuse of the top. Your pictorial is well done too. Thanks for sharing.
John
I agree with Jim. It would take a lot of wear and resulting play to cause the rudder gland to leak. I repacked mine some years ago, and it has no leak. I also have some pitting under the packing.
It is easy enough to check to gudgeon for wear: Get in the water. Grab the bottom of the...
I use 3 gallons of Trinidad Red. It works well in Florida for year round protection. It is not good if you dry dock your boat for the winter, looses is effectiveness if it dries out for too long.
I last hauled out 10 years ago. Other than an occasional barnacle, I only have fowling where the...
Thank you Jeff for providing the info for a drawing. That is what made it all happen.
This all started with Troy's inquiry - see above. I imagine his boat's gudgeon problem cost the seller dearly. The boat had to be rehauled and stored at the Hinckley yard in Stuart while the new gudgeon was...
Attached is a drawing of the rudder gudgeon from Jeff Lovett's M382. He traced it and sent the tracing to me. I then called him, and got the dimensions listed. If someone with a 383 or 384 has their boat hauled, would it be possible to verify the drawing so we could all use it on all models...
Thanks guys for your help. It is valuable since it confirms my measurements. After more careful checking, I come up with 7 ft. for the shift cable and 8 ft. for the throttle. Two 8 footers would also work.
10 ft. or longer 33c series cables are readily available. Shorter ones not so easy to...
I cannot find anything in the archives on the length of M-38 engine cables. The best I can determine is that the throttle cable is around 7 1/2 feet. Clutch cable looks similar. Since one end is inside the Edson pedestal, it hard to be exact.. Anyone know the correct length for each one?
I replaced my cutless bearing myself in an hour or two without dropping the rudder. It has been a while, but I do not recall it being a big deal. I did have the coupling off, but can't recall if that was necessary to side the shaft forward enough to remove the prop and bearing. I would remove...
I have been happy with Renogy 100 w panels. They are monocrysaline and good quality I considered Kyocera, but found these to be a more reasonable price per watt at the time I was shopping for panels (check out their ebay sales, and make an offer). I have them mounted over the Bimini in such a...
Gil,
My 384 has an Octopus linear drive, model OCTAF1212LAR12. It works well even with a 20 year old Navico 8000. Steers better "wing on wing" than I do, and is very strong on a reach. These used on a variety of below deck autopilot systems, and compatible with most systems with reversing 12...
Actually, I saw piece on the nightly news yesterday about kids making things on a 3D printer, and thought the same thing. It would be a great way to make a pattern, but have no idea where to get it done. If anyone has any leads, let us know. Also, I would like options to Bristol Bronze...
