Yanmar Starter

Hi Gang
I have just finished changing out the cutlass bearing, installed new SS shaft, and replaced engine mounts, also engine driven fuel pump as it was dripping on forward starboard mount, ( thanks for the heads up Dick ). I am having an intermittent problem with the starter and suspect it may be in the solenoid, however it is a sealed unit. Does anyone know of any starters or a supplier for them. The specs on mine are 1.8 KW p/n # S12-24 made by Hitachi, this is for a 3QM engine.
Thanks, John

John: Don't know if you tried Mac Boring, they have a few locations around the country, the one closest to me is in Middleboro Ma P 800 622 5364 then say which store you want. You probably can have it rebuildt by a good generator shop as well

Dick Kilroy

PS Thanks for the thanks

Try cleaning the connections to the battery first. This includes both pos and neg, both ends, and all batt connections in the batt bank, and any connections to ground. Then lightly grease to prevent further corrosion. My bet is that this solves your problem.

I recently purchased 1970 Morgan 38 which was retro fitted in 95.....Im going to replace ports with s/s...Newfound metals has what looks like fair pricing but it appears that the V birth and companionway openings may need slight enlargement. The head and salon appear to fit fairly easily with their stock items. Would welcome any advice to include possible need to enlarge openings as well comments on other mfgrs

I had the same symptoms with my Yanmar not starting all the time. Turned out to be the ignition switch in the cockpit was faulty. A $30 fix instead of $600. Talk about sticker shock, the $600 was for a rebuilt starter from Mack Boring and only if I give them the one I replace.
Check out your switch first.

If you suspect a starter, look in your local area for an automotive electrical shop that rebuilds starters, alternators, etc. This will be a shop that supplies other shops with these parts overhauled. You will probably find that the internal components of your starter match those of auto components, and will be repaired or replaced much cheaper.

I am in the process of replacing my cutless bearing. Has anyone gone through this process? If so, what should be the price range at a good quality yard?
