I'm having the topsides of my 382 awl gripped this winter. Does
anyone know what colors were available when new. I've not seen
any thing but white.

Robert,
I have an original order sheet. It mentions no color, other than bootstripe.
I did see a 382 in navy blue. I think it is moored at the City Island YC, but I'm not sure.
I have been told that awlgriping the original color is better because potential scratches and nicks will show the original skin. Picture white scratches on navy blue. I am also told that white lasts longer, because it does not fade as fast.
I like the colors, but I would have to consider the above if I were to awlgrip.

Robert,
If by topsides you are refering to the hull above the waterline, my 382 is awlgripped in " Jockey red " and really stands out in an anchorage. At first sight I didnt like the look but after about 20 minutes it grew on me and now I wouldn't change it. The paint job is at least 6 years old and still looks great and has held up well in the brutal South Florida sun. My deck is painted in a two-tone scheme....a light cream color on the non-skid and white on everything else. I'm sure this was not the original color scheme but I like it and have gotten many compliments from other sailors.
I'd be happy to mail you some photos if you're interested.

OOPS! I guess I had non skid on the brain. I have seen an '84 M364 with Navy Blue topsides that looks great after at least seven yearsin the Texas sun.

Nathaniel Herreshoff once said that "there are only two colors for a boat, black & white, and you have to be a damn fool to paint a boat black". Stella is white Imron.
