SSB Antenna Installation

gallagher805

michael g.
I am looking for information concerning the installation of a SSB
antenna. There are lots of thoughts about distance from the mast
head, distance from the rigging (mast) and overall antenna
length. If anyone has some ideas and/or good sources of
information , I would be interested to hear about them. THANKS.

My upper insulator is about three feet from the masthead. The lower just high enough so it won't be touched while transmitting. I wanted as much antenna as possible, and let the tuner deal with the effective electrical length.

Whatever happened to "23ft" of insulated wire. Isn't that the standard/rule of thumb 1/4 wave length? Can't remember even tho I'm a HAM. I need some info on all that too, I'm outfitting as we speak. Does anyone have any neg vibes on the good deal SGC2000 set up that's being offered now. The ICOM is a sweet rig but the RT is Expensive!

I've installed several ssb units and here's the condensed version of what I've been able to find out. An old fasion di-pole wire would probably give the best results but are measured for a specific freq. I would suspect that you plan on using the insulated back stay with a auto-tuner. Here the ideal set up is the tuner as close to the back stay as possible and the insulators using as much as possible of the back stay. With the lower insulator just above lower turnbuckle and the lower (reachable)part of the back stay covered with a plastic stay cover to protect from touching during transmitting. There are other more critical to performance installation considerations ie:ground plain .
Good luck. Feel free to email me if you have other questions.

Tony,
Check out the "equipment survey" at WWW.CruisingSailor.Com. The last time I looked in there there was at least two or three owner reviews of the SGC2000. The reports were not encouraging.
