I want to have a spare halyard on my mast to use as a safety
line when going aloft. Does anyone know how far the new halyard
exit plate needs to be located above and/or to the side of the
existing plate so as to not weaken the mast.
I have two main hailards and one jib hailard. I will check the spacing of holes. But, having just gone up the mast, I would recommend not putting the spare hailard inside if your goal is mast work. For a spare and safety line, you want to be able to get to the hailard as you go up, I think.
