rudder

grimshaw

Richard Grimshaw
I have a morgan-384, and the rudder seems to swing back and forth
and pull the wheel. This also happens while motoring while
accelerating, but to a lesser extent. The wheel also seems to
stick with a kind of grinding feel to it. Would appreciate any
sugestions for taking care of this

Alex -- It's really hard to say what the problem is without looking carefully at the mechanism. You can get at the cables and pulleys from the quarterberth engine access panel and from the seat locker under the helmsman's seat. The pulleys should be firmly on their axles and the cables should be nice and snug -- if they are loose, that may be your problem. Have someone turn the wheel side-to-side while you observe. If everything looks OK there, then the problem may be in the Edson pedestal, which can be dismantled and inspected. Edson will send you instructions if you don't have them. (Any sailing magazine will have an Edson ad with a phone number.) It's important to take care of steering problems promptly -- you don't want to have the system fail in heavy wind and seas! Good luck.
