Roller Furling Replacement

actigner

Alan C. Tigner
I am planning on repacing my Streamstay furling on my 382 in the
spring. I am condidering either ProFurl or Schaefer. Has
anyone switched to either of these. Any advice and model
numbers will be appreciated.
In the spring my old streamstay will be available for parts to
any one who needs them.
In heavy weather I have to use the winch to furl with my
streamstay. Is this normal, I bought this boat in June and this
is my first roller furling.
Thanks

I have the Schaefer I think 2000. Hasn't even caughed in the five years since I installed it. I went one size bigger than the manufactures recomendation.

<div>I replaced my Streamstay II about a month ago. I went to a Pro Furl NC 42 system. I have had it out only once to check it out, and it worked fine. Wx conditions were very moderate (wind 10-12k), so it was not a test of its max capability by any standards. So far I like it. My boat is a 384.I also have available spare parts from the old roller furling.

I got the Schaefer 2000 about two years ago and so far have had no problems. However you need to be careful about the instalation to make sure the amount of line does not jam when the drum is full.ie only wind the exact amount needed to furl.

I "retired" my Streamstay a couple of weeks ago and have a new Shaefer 2100 for a replacement -- probably installing it this coming weekend after the mast goes back in. The 2100 is near the upper end of the range for a 38' boat, so if you do a lot of heavy weather sailing, the 3100 may be a slightly better choice.
One complicating factor is that with a Streamstay you don't have a wire headstay. You'll have to work out all the details of a proper stay, including wire size, before you can specify a furler. You should use either 5/16" or 3/8" SS wire for the new headstay.
Good luck.

I have a Profurl--the NC42, I think. It is oversized. It works very very well and got a great write up in Practical Sailor. They reviewed all the furlers in two articles over the last few years. they had good things to say about Profurl and about Schaefer. Email them or write them and get the reprints for good reviews.

I have the Schaefer 2000 since the spring of 1990. We carry a Hild 10/40 150% genoa. We often reef as far as 90%. We have never needed service. I never use a winch, only hand over hand for pulling in. It has worked flawlessly and I would recommend it. Southerly is used every weekend from May through Oct. including at least a 4 week vacation. Thats a lot of furling, unfurling, and reefing.
Pay attention to the first lead block after the drum. If you get the right angle you will never have a jam-up. This goes for any furler.

Chuck,
No suggestions on cost or source. Shop around the discounters such as Post, Defender, West, and finally ask your sailmaker if he can be competive. I would wait for boat show time, when they are all together in one area. This way you don't have to do the running. Go from booth to booth and see if you can get them to sharpen their pencils for you. This is not a cheap buy, so you should be able to squeeze a few more dollars off the normal discount price at a boat show.
Good Luck,
Larry
