Rocna/Mantus/Manson - Standard Bow Roller

datswite

Ken Ferrari
All - Is anyone using one of the newer roll bar style anchors in the standard port side bow roller? I haven't found anything in the archives related to the original bow roller.

I printed the Mantus 45lb anchor template to see if it would fit my roller. It seemed that the roll bar would interfere with the original navigation light fixture installed on my bow pulpit. If I remove the light fixture, it looks like the roll bar would just clear the mounting plate.

With that said, it's very difficult to determine if an anchor will work in the roller by using a paper anchor.

I'm currently using a CQR, but hope to "upgrade."

Ken - I recently bought a 45# Manson Supreme for my M382 that was on special sale at Defender. I have tried it every which way but it will not fit back on the bow roller. The roll-bar hits the nav light. I even took the light off but it still hits at the top of the mounting plate and the pulpit tubing leaving the anchor a good 6-8 inches from the roller.

The only way to possibly get it to fit would be to cut off the roll-bar which is just tubing. But it is designed for the roll-bar to help self-righting for quick setting.

I emailed the company to see if they had any reports of others doing that but they never responded.

Alan Shedd sent me a link about Rocna coming out with a new design in a few months without the roll-bar. The Spade and Ultra brands are the other companies with non roll-bar models. Here is the article and Rocna website:

What do people use for anchors? I have a 35# CQR with a bent shaft. I am looking at the so-called new generation anchors but I am worried about the roll bar.

We use the Fortress FX23 only weighs 15 pounds
Best anchor I've ever used. Works great but have to use at least 5:1 scope. Do some searches on "best anchors". Rocna, Fortress, best setting and most reliable....but of course it's your "brakes" so you should always have at least two anchors for different situations. We set it everything with the Fortress more than any other anchor I've ever used...except perhaps the Rocna a a friends 40,000lb trawler. The U.S. coast guard tested a ton of anchors in different conditions with different sea bottoms...as did sailing magazine

I'm leaning towards the Rocna with the fortress as backup. Lots of money, but probably well spent. So I would also like to hear how the rollbars work on the bow of the Morgan. I have a 383.

Rocna has apparently come out with a new anchor without a roll bar. I'm gonna check it out today at the boat show.

Rolf,
Below is a link to a photo Vic Copeland sent me a few years ago of a Rocna mounted on his Morgan 38, "Oconee." The other two photos show our 45lb Manson which fits a bit differently. Hope this helps.

I couldn't get more than one photo to upload to this site.

I tried the Manson Supreme on my bow and even with the light removed the roll-bar hits the pulpit like the photo in Rolf's last entry. Yeah, you could tie it like that but it will swing freely as the boat moves. Note the shank is not down on the roller. This would be unacceptable for me. I'm returning the Manson to Defender and waiting on the new Rocna without the roll-bar to come out.

I want to get a 44 lb Spade. has anyone tried it on our rollers? Even if it fits on one side, will it still allow me to store my second anchor (Delta) on the second roller or are they too close together?

i have a 45 lb CQR having a bow roller made for it now !
One roller for the 35 Bruce the other the CQR !

right, I already have two standard Morgan rollers. But I am afraid if I put a 44 lb spade on the port side, I would be able to store my second anchor, a 44 lb delta, on the starboard. Right now I store the 44 lb delta on the port and a 45 lb CQR on the starboard.

I have a 44 pound spade on my 384, great anchor, road out 55 kt. Storm in Miami harbour with no issues. It fits nicely in the port side roller. I have thought of having a second roller made for the starboard side for my 44 lb bruce, and am pretty sure it would need to project further out than the port side to accomodate both.

Yes the welder man came to my boat yesterday and i saw the new roller for the first time. it will stick out further than the Port side one to allow the CQR to not bang itself to death ! Looks like the guys understands..
When i see it done i'll believe.

Was looking at the roller style anchors to replace my underweight (but has never dragged yet!) 35# CQR so I cut out the Rocna template for the 44# (Rocna 20) pasted it to some cardboard in my kitchen, and visited my boat last Saturday to see how it looked . . . not so good. I'm afraid the Mantus and other rollbar styles would be about the same. So now watching for results of the new $450 Vulcan by Rocna to compare it with the $760 Spade.

Anybody have thoughts on the new Vulcan? I keep asking: What's $200 v new boat?

All, I recently purchased a new Spade galvanized 44 lb anchor. I have two standard Morgan rollers. I got rid of my old 45 lb. CQR--or I hope to, if someone shows up to buy it. Anyway, I am now carrying a 44 lb Delta on the starboard roller, tucks in well. On the port roller, I carry the Spade. Both now fit very nicely.

I keep the delta ready because on a couple occasions in my life, having a spare anchor ready to go quickly saved my boat. I hope the Spade works as well as advertised and I never have to use the Delta in an emergency. there are lots of comments and articles out there on the new concave anchors. Were I competent to do so, I would post a picture. sorry.

Given my situation, I don't know if I would need a bigger storm anchor if I go on a long distance trip. But a bigger Spade or perhaps a big Fortress, lashed to the deck, seems like a good choice for that.

Hi Rolf, We are interested in the Rocna Vulcan 25. If we see any results we will post them. If you see any results please post them. Thanks ,Kanes

Rolf - I have a Mantus 45 and have posted photos of it on my roller. It fits. Mantus is also releasing a bow roller attachment that is supposed to stabilize the anchor. I'll pick one up, because, while the anchor does fit, it wobbles.

Ken, just curious if you ever picked up the bow roller attachment?

I crewed on a Brewer 44 from Exuma to Tortola a couple of years ago (http://www.windtraveler.net/) and they had a block of some composite that was the width of the bow roller with a slit for the anchor shank which we wedged when the anchor was on the bow roller. I thought I might fabricate something similar myself. I just ordered my Mantus today taking advantage of West Marine 15% off storewide and free shipping. They just started carrying Mantus and are actually priced more competitive than direct from Mantus.

I did try the Mantus anchor stabilizer. It doesn't fit the bow roller. They have it available in two configurations - one a mirror image of the other, so you can mount on either side of the roller. My roller flares out at the forward opening, so the Mantus stabilizer won't mount correctly. I don't think the Mantus is that unstable - I snug it up pretty tight when raising the anchor, so it doesn't move too much.

I remember seeing that Windtraveler article a few years ago. I saved a link to the post and have meant to try their idea myself, but I haven't yet got around to it.

There is a website called Morganscloud.com. It is written by a Brit couple, John & Phillis. They maintain a blog called Attainable Adventure Cruising. They have an E book called Anchoring Made Easy. One of the chapters, written in August 2016, is called Thoughts on Vulcan. John's wisdom is based on years of mostly high latitude sailing of many thousands of sea miles. Worth a look.
We carry a 45lb Manson Supreme as our prime anchor on Dana. It fits the roller that came with the boat. I have no idea if that roller came from the factory or was an add-on. I did have to raise the nav light, not because the roll bar hit it, but because it partly blocked the lights arc of view.
