repairs to opening ports

dennis

Dennis Shea
We recently broke the plastic part of the opening port that covers the hinge. It is an integral part of the opening part of the glass. I think that the ports were made by Bowmar. If anyone knows, I would be interted. I read, with interest, about ordering new ports from Nova Socitia, but would prefer to just repace the glass (plastic in the port). Please let me know if you have any experience, and problems I may encounter.

<div>From what I can tell most of the plastic ports in the M-38X series were made by Gray Enterprises. Replacement ports and parts are now sold under the Bomar name. Two sources for these products/part are JSI 800-234-3220 and the special order department of Boats/US, 800-568-0319.I would try JSI first because their catalog says they have replacement parts instock for the Gray Ports.

On my 384 the smaller ports were made by Beckson. I was able to buy replacement windows only (without frames) directly from Beckson just last year. I got in touch with them through West Marine. If you can't get to them, I'll dig
out the old invoice and get you a number.

Bert,
Are you talking about the lens? The "window" part that you see through? If so, give me your address, I will mail one to you. I recently replaced my portlights and saved a couple of the old ones.Fred

I was able to purchase a replacement portlight (opening port) from Gray Marine. As I recall, the complete portlight cost around $90. The phone number was (603) 826-5791. Good luck.

I want to thank everybody for their advice and particulrly Fred for his offer. I obtained a new lens, glass opening part directly from Bowmr. They suggested that I might want to order it through one of the discount distributors and get it cheaper. I didn't as I was only ordering one and wanted to see if it worked. Part number is GP907-23 Gray 414 Clear Lens. It is now installed. A little tricky with the spring. I may order more from Boat's U.S. or West where the discount on 5 may make it worth it. Undiscounted price was $36.
