Older Morgan 38 issues

My father, 74 years old, is thinking of either selling his boat,
a Morgan 38 of the original K/CB design, or passing it on to his
children. In researching the design, I found this website and
bulletin board which has provided hours of reading material
(I've scanned all the archieved posts as well). Most of the
posts to the bulletin board apparently deal with the later
designs of the M38 and some of the problems/concerns with them.
Does anyone have comments/concerns/suggestions about the
original K/CB M38 (hull # unavailable until mid-January when we
go see the boat)? As far as I know the boat is still equiped
with basically the same gear as when new. Any input would be
appreciated, especially if the decision is made to sell the boat.

Some of our members have the original Morgan 38. Stella Maris is one, owned by Jim and Jan Hudnut. The Charley Morgan 38 is a fine boat, perhaps a better and more foregiving sailing boat than the Brewer design and well put together. Not as much room down below. An older boat, without upgrades, will require lots of work or money if you want to bring her up to date. But a restored Morgan 38 would be a fine boat to have if you want to sail. I urge you to try to talk to the owners of some of the CM 38s, although for privacy reasons I feel constrained not to post their phone numbers. You will get responses eventually here, I am sure.

Steve: I have the last Charley Morgan 38 built. Hull #79. I have owned the boat since October 1979 and it is, and has been, a fine sound boat. They are built like Sherman tanks and I have sailed her in some very tough Lake Huron weather every year since I have owned her. We race every year, and although it took me some time to learn how to competitively sail her in recent years we have taken many flags and have even won the season championships in PHRF D class at the Detroit Regional Yacht Racing Assoc. Yes, I have put a lot of time and effort into the boat and bought an ungodly number of sails, but if you are just going to cruise the boat, the cost of new sails is not unreasonable. Incidentally, I am 72 years old and my wife, Janet, an I doublehand in Lake Huron every year after the Bayview Yacht Club Port Huron to Mackinac Island Race. The boat still has the original engine (although my son overhauled it two years ago)the original standing rigging and portlights. I have been through this boat from stem to stern and believe that I can answer any question you might have regardless of its complexity. Just ask, I love talking about Stella Maris. I own an origional Morgan 38 keel centerboard. I have had the boat seven years now. I have done many upgrades in it. I did these upgrades with the idea in mind to singlehand it. The boat is everything that the other two replys have said. It is a tank but sails well. A sister ship Jacquelyn 2 won the Around Long Island Regatta, a 185 mile race, several times. The boat can easily outsail her handicap. My Morgan handles weather very well and I feel safe in weather.
You are correct in assuming that most people here are owners of newer model Morgans.
I will be happy to spend some time on line with you here or better yet e-mail MorganSloop@aol.com .
Where is the boat you are intrested in located? What is the price asked?
I know the boat inside and out and will be happy to share.
Give me a shout.Capt Robert E MorganSloop@aol.com
