I am the new owner of Eliana II, currently in Marina del rey, but I will be moving her to San Francisco ASAP. Last weekend me and a couple friends friends drove down for a shakedown sail around Catalina Island. It was the most amazing sail I've been on.
We spent Thursday at the dock getting her ready, taking care of a few minor issues, and procured a used genoa from Minney's Marine. We left the dock at around 2am Friday morning. It easy motoring at night under a meteor shower. By daybreak winds were around 25 knots, with 6 ft swells. Eliana handled great, easily making 10 knots close hauled, and peaked at 11.8 knots for a short bit.
We circled Santa Barbara Island but due to wind and sea couldn't anchor there. So we headed back to Catalina. Nearing Catalina Harbor the winds had died so we raised the Spinnaker. We took a Mooring there and went to a Halloween party at the pub in two harbors. After breakfast we headed out and found ourselves in the middle of a pod of dolphins, so we cut the engine and swam with them for a while. We anchored for the second night in Little Harbor. Completely private and beautiful. My friend surfed the beach there at sunset while I hiked. I'm going to have to learn to surf very soon!
We left Little Harbor early Sunday morning. We tied a line off the back and spend some time "surfing" behind the boat. Topped off the fuel at Avalon before heading back.
Next project, get this great boat to SF where I can sail her every weekend!
