Just Bought a Morgan 382

Greetings All!

I just purchased a 1978 Morgan 382 Hull Number MRY22044M78G. Previously registered to Edward W. Stewart from Frederick, MD. I am looking for any information about the history of this specific vessel. If anyone has a suggestion for resources, please let me know.

Gil, Congratulations on your new boat and welcome to the group.

The number you listed in your post is the hull id number (HIN). It can be found stamped into the transom. The hull number refers to the number 382 constructed by Morgan Yachts. You should be able to find the hull number in various locations throughout the vessel. I've found ours, #115 for a 1979 382, hand written with marker in the under side of floor hatches, on the top face of ceiling panels, etc.

Was the vessel registered in MD or documented with the USCG? If USCG documented then you can request (and pay for) an "abstract of title". The abstract will list all previous owners and home ports.

What is your new vessels name and where is her new home port?

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the response. It was registered in MD, and has a USCG number 602994. I found a listing under that Coast Guard number with a previous owner in 2006, but not the most recent owner. I was hoping to find the most recent owner. I have a former mailing address for him, but he has moved. The boat had some minor water damage from a burst drain pipe last winter, and BoatUs totaled the boat. I bought it through a broker from the insurance company. Other than some minor cabin floor repair, it is in good shape. However, the previous owner did not leave the sails with the boat. I am hoping he still has them and I can track him down. His name is Edward W. Stewart. I thought he might have been on this forum in the past.

I am still working on the name and home port. It is currently in Baltimore, but I will be moving it south. I have had vessels at Coles Point on the Potomac in VA, and Crowne Point in Gloucester, VA. Not sure which of these I will choose for the Morgan. Coles Point has nicer facilities, but Crowne Point probably has better wind and closer to the Bay.

I believe you posted information about a holding tank replacement on your 382. I have a separation in my holding tank between the top of the tank and the fiberglass of the keel. probably caused by freezing last winter. I am debating trying to repair that area, or moving the tank. You did a nice job on your replacement.

Hi Gil,
Welcome to the group!
All the best,
Helene

Gil,

There is certainly no shortage of information and suggestions on repairing the 382 holding tank available in the archives. Thanks for the compliment on our solution.

Two other internet resources that may be helpful in your search for the previous owner are the Morgan Owners Facebook group and Morgan Yacht Owners Yahoo Group

Good luck with the search.

I'm in Cobb Island, MD... just up the river from Coles Point. Pirate's Den Marina. Probably one of the cheapest places on the Bay. $1500/yr, regardless of length. Same price for liveaboard. No frills whatsoever, but you can do whatever you want on your boat. You can have my slip... I'm going cruising in a few weeks.
