John Kretschmer

So, I'm attending the Strictly Sail boat show in Chicago. I bumped into John Kretshmer yesterday and decided to pick his brain about a few passagemaking ideas. He asked what kind of boat I had, and, when I said a Morgan 38, his eyes lit up. He said, "The Ted Brewer one?! That's a great boat! You picked a great one for offshore sailing. She's a great sailor!"

Of course, we already knew that, but it was nice to hear someone of his caliber and experience speak so highly and excitedly about it.

I have sailed with John on two different trips and on the first I picked his brain for DAYS on end about the best boat to buy, and every time he came back to the Morgan 38 for me. (For people with more $ there were certainly other boats of value.). So wasn't I surprised to find one sitting on the hard in our boat yard, for sale! It is now mine. You probably heard him say that what was really significant for him is the modified fin keel, skeg hung rudder, and the fine entry, providing us with a boat that "takes care of you rather than one you have to take care of". I absolutely think that is the boat we have. John is a great man, I first met him at the Chicago boat show, too. I hope to see him later this year, and will be doing one last sail with him next May in the Mediteranean. I strongly recommend any of his "heavy weather" voyages to get a taste of the offshore. Say hi if you see him again. -- Rolf
