Galley counter top

doc

Donald O. Cox, Ph.D., P.E.
The first mate wants a new counter top in the galley. The sink seems to be bonded to the countertop. There are no clips on the bottom side like in a home installation. Has anyone removed the sink or replaced the countertop?

I replaced all the counter tops on my 384 last year. The sink was held down with a silicone sealant and no fastners. Be careful not to pry to hard on the edges, as they will bend. Good luck.

<div>Bill. Did you remove the old formica or did you bond the new top to it? If so, how hard was the job? Thanks

When we got our boat a few years ago, we decided that the galley sink should be replaced. In attempting to remove it, I pulled up some of the formica to which the sink was bonded with some sort of adhesive caulk. So unintentionally I wound up having to replace the countertop as well. I patched the small areas where the old top had chipped up around the sink. I then cut a new top to fit the entire surface. The only tricky part was that I didn't want to remove the teak trim, so cutting the piece to fit precisely inside the trim was a chore. Then we contact-cemented the new piece right on top of the old formica and used a small router to cut out the openings for the sink and the food bin. I also recovered the top of the food bin, of course. It all turned out fine and it's been in place two and half years now with no problems.

I removed the entire formica from the galley. The first step is to remove the entire cabinet unit from behind the oven by removing the molding and the screws holding it to the bulkheads. After the cabinet is out it is fairly simple to remove the formica by heating it with a simple heat gun from any building supply store. Heat the formica and use a thin putty knife to lift the formica trying not to break it in too many pieces.(You want to save the patern) I then used a belt sander where possible to remove as much old glue as possible. It is not a small job, but worth the effort.
good luck

We have replaced our formica countertops with a Wilsonart hard surface top. This surface is like Corian however it is only somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4" thick. We also found an exact replacement for the sink. If you need that I'll be happy to look it up in my receipts. We are very pleased with the new countertops.
