End boom sheeting - Purchase

captrob

<div>For those of you 382 folk that have end boom sheeting how much
purchase do you have on your system? Is 4:1 adaquate? My 382 has the worst of both worlds - end boom travler and winch
on the cabin top. Why? I don't know? Thanks,Vic C

Vic, I have a 79 382 that has been rigged for a mid-boom system with a cabin top traveler and winch next to the companionway. I use that setup most of the time when I have company, but when I am singlehanding and its blowing I like to rig the end boom mainsheet. I use a 4:1 system (boom vang) which works fine. If you really need to crank down on that setup I run the sheet over to my genny winch.

Having both systems gives some flexibilityGood Luck

Vic, on my '79 M382 I have a 6:1 sheeting arrangement (actually, it might be 7:1 since 7 parts hold the load -- not sure how the ratio is defined). The boat came with that setup, so the original owners must have made the change. There's a lot of line in the cockpit due to the extra purchase, but a sheet-bag hung under the traveler holds the excess. I've not had any significant trouble sheeting in the boom, but must confess that I've not yet had this boat out in heavy weather.
Fair winds...

I have a 6:1 and it works fine but there is a lot of sheeting when you are in light air, but in heavy weather it performs fine and you can always run the bitter end to a winch.

I like the idea of the double set up. For me though on my 78 382, I have 4:1 at boom end, which is good for me single-handing. It was good to hear the comment of "too much purchase" from the 6:1 sheeting. I can muscle it really tight for close haul and I use the traveller a little to bring it up about an inch. That helps. After that it creates too much curve. I am not partial to winching it in but hey if it works -why not? I'll try it next time
