Dry Martini

Does anyone know who owns this M38x? Is it someone on here? Seen at the Petaluma Marina. I am a short walk from that Marina, though I keep Eliana in Sausalito.

Not yet. I couldn't get to the boat because the gates were locked. Still need to check with the office. There does appear to be a user here, dry_martini, in the SF Bay Area but hasn't posted since 2006.

small world. i passed by this marina complex twice over the holiday period on my way to sea ranch. could not imagine a marina with so many sailboats that far north of the open water. how far is this place from 'sail-able' water?

Too far. I keep Eliana in Sausalito. I could almost sail to Half Moon Bay in the amount of time it takes to motor from Petaluma to the GG Bridge. I had Eliana up here for the lighted boat parade. It took me 4 hours to motor from Sausalito to the Petaluma Marina. With a strong flood tide I was making 8.5 knots by the GPS. Without the tide helping, it was a little slower going out. Also, the marina is only 3 ft deep at low tide. In Petaluma, there was +8 tide coming in, and -2 tide overnight, leaving Eliana firmly stuck until the tide came back in. So ingress and egress needs to be timed with the tides. I lived through it for one day, but wouldn't want my boat to be in that regularly. It's a shame, since as I said I can walk there, and the slips are way cheaper than Sausalito.

sounds like sausalito is your better choice. four hours of motoring is a bit much. and your sailing options look really great from there. that's what puzzled me when i saw that beautiful facility in petaluma right along 101. have you sailed to the faralons? your sailing conditions outside the golden gate are not child's play. your ocean is hardly 'pacific.'

I've been to the Farallons several times. I've yet to see a great white :( but have had amazing whale watching. I've also been to Drakes Bay, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Monterey. And, I bought Eliana in Marina Del Rey, sailed a few days around Catalina, and brought her all the way up the coast.

I'm looking on a map of California and fail to see where a marina could be in Petaluma? Is it on the river?

What is the controlling depths on the River? Is the bridge at Route 37 a 65' or opening?

Jim

The hwy 37 bridge is fixed. My garmin calls it 69'. Depth of the channel is supposed to be 6', but it has been decades since it was last dredged. That used to happen every couple years when it was used for commerce. Petaluma River is actually a Slough. It's gross and muddy and the current changes direction with the tide.

Just north of the Marina are two opening bridges. One for a train (haystack bridge-just completed construction and still testing), and one for cars (D street bridge). The petaluma yacht club is just north of the D street bridge.

Wow! Two bridges and a very long distance to get to open water for sailing. Not very conducive for a nice day on the water. You are right to be in Sausalito. We've been there in the early 80's and I was in love with the boats there.
