CM38 Bottom Paint

Hey for those with a CM38, how many gallons of ablative bottom paint do you use? Anyone have a bottom paint recommendation for what will be a Florida/Bahamas boat for the most part? Not obsessed with ablative, it's just what I've used in the past.

I put on 1 coat of ablative each season, takes about 1 gallon and remove as much of it as possible at end of season to minimize build up. I've used petit ultima 60 with good results. My son just hauled his boat and had less growth using west marine PCA at half the price of ultima 60! I'll use that next season.

Thanks Bill. It's pretty incredible that a single gallon will cover that far! Do you scrub the hull at all during the season?

I give it a light scrub around labor day trying not to remove too much paint. I paint it with a brush rather than a roller, thinning with naptha as necessary, I know that sounds nuts but I get better coverage and smoother finish that way.

Practical Sailor has done tests on bottom paints over the years. They include Florida waters. Go on the PS website and check out their ratings.

I agree, I use 1 gallon of paint/3 quarts thinner/1 quart Penetrol/3/16" nap roller. Almost as smooth as a spray job
