Charley M 38 centerboard cable

Bud Karins
I need some information from anyone who has changed the
centerboard cable on their Morgan 38. Is there an easy way?
Can someone give me any simple step by step instruction. I
don't have the slightst idea as to how to attack the cable much
less how to get to it.
Thanks guys.

Capt. Bob: Are you proposing to replace the cable that runs from the front of the piston back to the CB winch ? Or, are you proposing to service the connection at the CB that raises the CB ? On my hull (#79)it seems a relatively simple procedure of disconnecting the cable at the piston, attach a new one and thread forward to the turning pulley and then back to the winch under the starboard cockpit seat. Admittedly it's a bitch to access the winch as it is in a very tight spot, but I have been there and it can be reached. The is a set screw that holds the winch on the crank (and probably a keyway). I have never taken the winch apart, but reset the position of the drum on the crank. The connection of the wire rope to the piston is a compression nut that holds the wire to the piston end.Obviously, if you are in the water and disconnect the wire without supporting the CB, or stopping the piston at the stuffing box, it will drop to full extension without a way to raise it. If you are out of the water it can be propped up. That's the only advice I can give, at the moment. Let me know. Jim Hudnut
