Charleston Harbor Marina

Who owns the Morgan 38 in Charleston Harbor Marina? Some interesting work done to it and would like to know more.

Ken, Do not have any details about the vessel, but am curious as to what you mean by, "interesting work".

BTW. Good to hear from you. How are the travels going?

Jeff, this boat had a very nice dual anchor roller. It had a Sampson post forward of the anchor locker. And an inner forestay. The forestay chainplate was forward of the anchor locker... curious as to how it was anchored. It appears as though it went through the deck.

Oh, things are going well. We've been in Charleston since Sunday. Nice city! We are leaving in about an hour, though.

Ken
That Morgan 38 in Charleston wasn't "Sayonara", was it? If so, it is owned by David & Kristen Brinkley. He is a Naval Architect and has some very interesting innovations on the boat.

Jim

Unfortunately, it was bow into the slip, so I couldn't see the name. It's he a member of this board?

Ken
Yes, he has been in the past. The last time we met up with them was in Charleston. It's just a guess on my part that the boat you saw was theirs because you said it had nice innovations. David came on board my boat, Dana, and in 10 minutes had given me a half dozen ideas for additional storage. He is quite the sailor and designer.

Jim

Nice recall Jim. I'll be you are correct about the boat / owners

I met David & Kristen and went aboard Syonara when they passed through Beaufort a couple years ago. Nice couple that has lived and traveled aboard their M382 for many years. I do recall some of their more noticeable modifications included replacing the teak cap rails with some FRP material and eliminating the torpedo tube drains in favor of a more traditional drain system. There were many other mods to the vessel, but these would be the most noticeable when passing by.

Hi Ken,
Jim and Jeff guessed correctly, that's Sayonara. We have owned her for 11+ years and I have never been afraid to make her what I want.
Inner stay is essential tied into the hull, deck and fwd bulkhead with a thick beam laminated down the center of the upper locker. The samson post is attached to this beam. The fwd end of the windlass is attached to this beam and because of this the chain to drops straight down into the lower locker forward of the bulkhead. I glassed the aft side of the bulkhead and made the lower locker water tight with a gasket-ed aluminum plate forward forward of the chain access door. The forward locker now drains overboard just above the waterline, we had A LOT Of WATER come in to the bilge from the windlass hole prior to this mod. The floor of the upper locker has a large hole that I can pass the windlass lever down and knock over the chain castle saving a lot of time and aggravation bringing in the chain. I would not change much about this arrangement after a lot years sailing and living on anchor. Picture shows old cap rails prior to glassing the hull to deck joint the new ones are PVC plastic from Lowes painted with Kiwi Grip. The anchor locker doors are now painted with Kiwi Grip. Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Good to hear from you again. Are you still working out of Charleston? How is Kristen's back? The last we spoke she was dealing with back problems. Bonnie and I are doing well. We just cancelled our trip South this fall due to a family issue. There's always next year! How is the business doing? Are you planning on coming North in the future? Please keep in touch. We'd love to see the new ideas you've incorporated into Sayonara. Email: saildana382@msn.com.

Hey Jim,
We are in Charleston, although we have moved the boat to Bohicket marina. Much better fit for us, I would not recommend Charleston Harbor resort and Marina too any one at this point. It is sad, management and ownership are letting the facilities go and the Manager is not making many friend among the tenants.

Kristen and I are in good health, business is great. We did the Cuba race over the winter and are home now focusing on building the kitty investments up to fund another extended cruise, dreaming of the South Pacific! Please look us up when are headed through we would love to entertain ya'll.

Best,
David
