Anchor well-Windlass

<div>I have discovered a leak in the bow area of Vixen and am
wondering if it is the anchor well. I have previously covered
the whole area with resin but this may have a problem now.any
comments would help. Also has anyone installed an electric
windlass in the well ityself without using copper or PVC pipe in
the V-berth area. As I may already have a problem here from the
previous question I am thinking of a Lofrens Progress One as
part of the fix.Mounting it on a glass/wood combination in the
well with chain droping below. Water entry from the well would
be a problem. Any comments would help

<div>Hi Dick
The first project I had to tackle when we purchased "Dana" in 1987 was to tear out and replace the floor of the anchor well which was plywood and rotten to the point of being like oatmeal. The new floor was a solid lay up of fiberglass. It hasn't leaked since. A few years later when we installed the anchor windlass it was done on deck aft of the well with a 2 1/2" copper pipe leading the chain into the lower chain locker. We like this arrangement for two reasons. First, the anchor windlass is in a perfect spot to work the chain without having to be cramped in the bow or to have to bend over to far to reach the unit. Second, the anchor well is still available to store 300' of 5/8" line with 50' of 3/8" chain for the storm anchor plus 250' of 1/2" line with 12' of chain and a 22lb Danforth as a second working anchor. The storm anchor is a X-37 Fortress that lives, disassembled, in a locker under the v-bunk. We use the v-bunk as our primary sleeping bunk and the chain pipe has never been in the way. Also, the electrical connections to the windlass are conveniently located nice and dry in the bunk for easy access. Hope some of this is of help to you and your project.
Jim.

<div>One area to check is the deck to bulkhead joint, both horizontal and verticle at the hull. I removed all old sealant material and glassed this area. The area near the hull will leak when the vessel is healed because water in the upper locker does not drain fast enough. The only problem area is on the starboard side, high, where the wiring for the bowlight passes.

<div>I do not have a windlass as yet but have put considerable thought into a system. I thought I would share my musings.I am considering a Maxell VW series. This series are vertical units with rope/chain wildcat with rope captstands on top. They can operate in both directions equally as well. I have 2 anchors on rollers on the bow (a 35# Delta and a 44# Bruce) both are equipped with 100 ft of 5/16 ht chain and 200 ft of 5/8 rode. Useing the Maxell VW I would be able to lead both chains and rodes to the windlass and operate the system clockwise for my primary and counter clockwise for my secondary. Right now I store both anchor rodes/chains in the upper locker. The locker has been divided into 2 sections by simple a plywood bulkhead. I have considered dropping one chain/rode into the lower anchor locker by install a stand pipe in the existing locker.Any thoughts?Fairwind and Rum Drinks.
