Yeah, I had a diver in the water replacing my prop last summer. I watched for the gators while he was down. The one in the picture is about 12' and probably weighs more than 500 pounds. An 8 footer hangs out a couple hundred yards downstream.
They are typically not aggressive toward humans. They become a problem when they are being fed. Someone started feeding a 6 footer at the marina years ago and he would swim over anytime he heard activity. I was careful not to reach too low toward the water when he was around.
There are lots of deer along the bank where the photo was taken. We see them almost daily. I suppose deer, rabbits, and turtles are his main staple.
Here is another big boy waiting for a meal. This picture was taken yesterday by one of my sailing buddies. He said this one is even bigger than the first one.

I think I'd be concerned just getting out of the car and walking to the boat at the dock. I'd bet no-one has little dogs as pets down in the Bayous.
