Warren Is Almost Back to San Francisco

In case you haven’t been watching, Warren has pulled into Ensenada, Mexico, roughly a days trip from San Diego.
We have been watching him claw his way up the west coast of Mexico, usually against the wind & current.
If you don’t know, Warren & his Morgan 38 Eliana have been circumnavigating, and he is almost done!

here is his tracker:

Nice work, Warren & Eliana!

Thank you. Super excited to have just checked back into the US at San Diego!
Still have to deal with some stupid harbor rules, but that's another topic.
I bought Eliana in Long Beach, so I'm a days sail from technically completing a circumnavigation. Although my official start was in SF.

Just a seed of an idea - Warren, it would be really nice to hear about your experience. I’m sure it’s impossible to condense all of your voyage into a couple of hours. But I would love to set up a Zoom meeting wherein you could talk about your experiences share photos, etc. With fellow Morganeers.

Warren, if you have any interest, let me know, and I’ll take care of the details.

Cheers,
-Mark

It would be about 5-6 days if weather was cooperative and if I did it in one hop non-stop. Unfortunately, weather isn't, and as I am single handed this is a bad place to sail more than 24hrs and nap along the way. So ,I am looking at lots of short hops, waiting for weather at each stop. I expect 3-4 weeks.

I have been in San Diego 5 days already under a gale warning. I expect similar the whole trip, so it might take even longer than I am planning.

Maybe in a month or so when I am settled and have consistent Internet.

It looks like Warren did not dawdle too long in San Diego, and he's clawing his way up the California coast. Appears to be at Point Conception now.

I did this a couple of times on a Hylas 54. After you get out of the Santa Barbra bight it gets snarly. We tried to be abeam of Conception at 0300 and still got pounded. A friend of mine did the Catalina race on a Contessa 39 and failed twice to get around and eventually had the boat trucked back to the SF.

Interesting, John.
It looks like he's around Point Conception. But then he'll either need to await a wind shift, tack out and into the stronger winds, or motor.
PredictWind shows some wind shifts coming up, and doesn't show any nasty stuff coming for days. So hopefully he'll have some luck. Warren doesn't seem like the kinda fella who would be keen on trucking (I would, after being beaten up for a while!).

I am at anchor at San Luis Obispo. Tomorrow I head to Morrow Bay.
I gave up trying to sail upwind and against the current a couple thousand miles ago in Costa Rica. So I wait until calm and motor. Aside from being much easier and faster, I can take advantage of shorter windows, and do short hops and anchor and sleep. Downside? I spent $450 for fuel in San Diego.
This was my second rounding of Pt Conception, the first in 2015 after I bought Eliana in Marina Del Rey. The trick is to wait at cojo anchorage. You can look at the noaa buoy data from there to know the conditions outside the anchorage. Leave when calm and foggy. Wind was calm and Pt Conception not bad, but between conception and San Luis Obispo was 3-4 meter swell. I didn't expect that.
