Throttle & Shift Cable Length

paragon

Alan & Cheryl Shedd
Time to replace throttle and shifty cables on our 1981 M382.
Perkins 4-108, Edson pedestal.

Anyone replaced recently and recall the length of cables you used? Are the ends that connect to the throttle and transmission standard?

Thanks,
-Alan

I replaced mine last year. Used SeaStar Extreme 3300. I think one was 8’ and the other 9’, but don’t trust my memory. There is a forked fitting inside your Edson pedestal that screws on to that end and, at least on my boat, another type of fitting that screws onto the other end. Best to confirm the type of fittings you have on the trans and injector pump (throttle). I believe they are standard, with 10x32 threads, but it would be best to confirm that on you particular installation. I think most cables are made by Teleflex, using different corporate names. Edson may also make cables.

I used 2 8' cables. I have a Volvo motor though so it might be different. Same standard connections on both ends, 10-32 screws and goes in a clamp.
The Edson cables are expensive. Its a PITA to change them, so consider anything and everything else in the steering at the same time. Take it apart, see what all needs replacement (steering cables, idler assembly, needle bearings, brake pads), order the parts, and put it back together the next weekend.

I went as far as taking the pedestal to a machine shop and had stainless sleeves installed for the needle bearings where the aluminum had worn. My steering is so smooth now. It is hard to compare how much better it is.

I got mine at West Marine and to my surprise they were not that expensive. (I try to avoid West Marine at all costs). Brought the old ones and they matched the length.
