Rear Engine Seal

dale

Dale Andrews
I've had the rear seal replaced on my Perkins 4-108 twice now and it still leaks. It's not a big leak - I add a quart of oil between changes - but it does leave a mess in the tray under the engine and would no doubt be a problem if I ever tried to sell the boat. Has anyone had similar problems, and, more importantly, got it fixed ??

<div>DonWe have the same problem on our Yanmar 3QM30F. The leak is very small and all collects in the drip pan for easy clean-up. We would hate to have to pull the engine just to fix the leak. Maybe someday when a major overhaul is due. If some knows how to correct the reason for the seal weeping in the first place, we would be interested in hearing.Jim and Bonnie

<div>Don,In the course of searching for my morgan I looked at a number of Morgan's, Bristols and Tartan's(?) with 4-108s. Many of them had the same rear seal leak. One of the borker's that showed us a number of boats indicated that the rear seal leak problem was common with many 4-108s. I asked him if Perkins had re-designed the seal at some point. He said to his knowledge the answer was no. He had known a number of owners that had fixed the seal only to have the problem recur. The pratical answer seems to be - Live with the leak. If you hear of a successful re-engineering of the seal I would be interested to know.Vic

<div>I had the same experience as Vic while looking for my 383. One broker, who was representing a boat owned by his brother and seemed knowledgeable of the Morgan 3XX series, told me that the rear seal of the 4-108 in the boat had a small leak. He told me it had been replaced once and started leaking shortly thereafter. He also said that his brother had questioned one other 3XX owner that had replaced the rear seal of his 4-108 because of a small leak only to have it start leaking again as well.I did not purchase this boat, but the one that I did purchase seems to also have a small leak. I also would be interested in hearing from anyone that has had this rear seal replaced and not had a leak reoccur. At this point I intend to let the oil absorbstion pad place in the oil drip due its duty.

<div>I would try contacting "qshicks@aol.com". He's an interesting fellow who is a good mechanic. Runs his own business I think. Don't be put off by his grammar and spelling. Smart fellow. He may know about the leaks.(still looking for our next boat)Nick

I am really glad I checked the BB today. I also have the small leak at the rear seal and was planning to have it replaced. I have not had to add oil between changes. I like the just live with it plan.

I too had the same problem on my 382 #254. I had the engine balanced, a process of adding weights to the fly wheel, and aligning the engine to .2000'. No more leak or vibration.
To balance the engine the transmission must be removed to expose the flywheel. A vibration engineer with some specialized equipment is also required.
